CONCEPT NOTE

Research Title: Experimental Investigation on Washed Recycled Aggregates

from Construction and Demolition Detritus as Engineering Fill Materials

Researchers: 1) Jhoven Laurden

2) John Paulo Mendenilla

3) Simon James Mortega

Objectives of the Study:

The study generally aims to evaluate the effectiveness of washed recycled

aggregates from construction and demolition detritus as engineering material through

experimental investigation. Specifically, it seeks to: (1) Assess the seismic

performance, load capacity and structural safety performance of washed

recycled aggregate concrete (2) Repurpose the materials discarded from

construction sites to be used in other constructions (3) Find ways to use said

materials effectively while still following the set standards and guidelines in

construction (4) Decrease the waste created from construction sites.

Concept Note or Short Introduction:

The surge of construction projects in the Philippines, as a result of urbanization

increased national demand for concrete. As one of the most essential building materials,

the country's annual use of concrete reached almost 26 million metric tons in recent
years. Extensive amount of concrete production has a negative effect on the global

warming process. Apart from, the excessive mining of aggregates, notably high-quality

gravel and river sand, has resulted in resource scarcity and price hikes. Maintenance and

demolition of existing structures, on the other hand, result in the buildup of construction

and demolition detritus, which not only consumes valuable land resources but also has

negative impacts on the environment and ecology. Therefore, researchers and

engineering professionals have conducted studies and experimentations that focus on

recycling and reusing construction and demolition waste, particularly concrete

aggregates, as engineering fill materials. Recently published studies have shown that

recycled aggregate concrete, which is comprised of recycled aggregate crushed from

construction and demolition waste and other components, can provide significant

environmental and economic advantages. The study aims to advance the knowledge on

using washed recycled aggregates as engineering fill materials, determine the feasibility

of using the materials as an alternative fill materials for main structural components and

identify the most practical and technical purpose of the washed recycled aggregates that

can decrease the amount of construction and demolition waste and lessen the demand

for natural aggregates to promote sustainable development in construction industry.
