Method:
1. After the rubber band was attached to the pin.
2. And the other end of the rubber band was attached to the newton scale.
3. I placed a ruler next to the rubber band and the length was measured and recorded.
4. After that a force of 0.1N was applied to the rubber band.
5. Then the final length was measured and recorded.
6. The extension of the material was then calculated.
7. Steps 4-6 was repeated for forces 0.2 N, 0.3 N, 0.4 N, 0.5 N, 0.6 N, and 0.7 N.
8. A graph was then plotted of force against extension.
9. The spring constant was then determined.

Assumptions: The rubber band would eventually be deformed.

Results:
Force F/N Length of Rubber Band l /m Extension x/m
0.0 9.3 0.0
0.1 9.5 0.2
0.2 9.7 0.4
0.3 9.9 0.6
0.4 10.1 0.8
0.5 10.3 1.0
0.6 10.9 1.6
0.7 11.1 1.8

Discussion:
Hooke’s Law states that the extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied, provided that
the limit of proportionality is not exceeded. F = ke (F = k x e). K = F divided by e. E = F divided by k.
M = rise/run
A gradient is a part sloping upward or downward
M= y2 – y1 divided by x2 – x1
M= 0.6 – 0.4 divided by 0.3 – 0.2
M= 0.2y divided by 0.1x

Therefore, M= 2
The gradient of a line is the spring constant (k)

Limitations: Temperature

Sources of Errors: Parallax error: persons can make mistakes when reading the stretched length of the spring as
they close and open different eyes to view the length.

Conclusion: In conclusion the spring constant of the rubber band was determined.
