Many German verbs require a complement
( Ergänzung ) in a certain case:
Akkusativ-Ergänzung

„Ich lese ein Buch.“

The rule? The verb "lesen" (to read) always

comes with a "Akkusativ-Ergänzung" - the
following object is always an Akkusativ-
Objekt.
In the same way, many verbs require a
complement with a specific preposition.
The preposition belongs to the verb and
determines the case of the complement.

Präposition "mit" +
Dativ-Ergänzung
„Ich telefoniere mit meiner Mutter"

The verb "telefonieren" (to talk on the

phone) always comes with the preposition
"mit". Since "mit" is a preposition that is
always followed by "Dativ", the complement
after this verb + preposition is also a "Dativ-
Ergänzung":

However, many vocabulary books do not
mention these "obligatory" prepositions
after the verbs.
It makes sense to learn these specific verbs
with their preposition together.
This cheatsheet lists the 50 most important
verbs that always have to go with a specific
preposition and complement (in Nominativ:
NOM; Akkusativ: AKK; Dativ: DAT.)
