My local zoo
I volunteer at my local zoo. Everyone is very
friendly here, even the animals! Well, most of
them…
Cheetahs are very fast, but the cheetah here is old, so the wolf is faster than the
cheetah! The wolf and cheetah are both big, but the polar bear is bigger. The
important thing at our zoo is that the animals and our visitors are all safe.
Habitat: It can depend on the species, but they live around the world, just not
in Antarctica. You can find them crawling in leaves, plants and wood in
woodland.
How to identify: Only the male beetle has got a horn. The female beetle has got
a small bump.
Fact 1: Do you know what sound a rhinoceros beetle makes? It hisses and
squeaks!
Fact 2: The Hercules beetle is stronger than any other animal! But a crocodile,
polar bear and a kangaroo are more dangerous than a Hercules beetle.
It can carry 850 times its own body weight. How amazing!
2 Read again. Then look and write. Write two more sentences about the beetle.
1 The Hercules beetle is than most other beetles.
2 The Hercules beetle is than any other animal.
3 The rhinoceros beetle eats .
4 The female beetle hasn’t got a .

A concrete jungle!
Cities like London are big, busy and not very safe or
welcoming places for wild animals. However, you might be
lucky enough to see a few wild animals stopping by for a
visit …
An otter: They are shy animals and difficult to spot! They’re
usually swimming and playing in wetlands and coastlines
around the UK, but some like the rivers, canals and wetlands
in the UK’s towns and cities.
A whale: It’s much bigger than an otter. It definitely isn’t
something that happens every day, but a beluga whale
appeared in London’s River Thames a few years ago!
A snake: Britain has got one poisonous snake, the adder.
London and other cities in the UK have got some great green
spaces, so these snakes like to slither and slide around
there. They also like to lie in the sun! An adder is more
dangerous than a grass snake, but it’s also much smaller.
These days, we see animals like foxes, rabbits and squirrels
in our cities every day. Some look quite friendly when you’ve
got some food… so they’re intelligent, too!
2 Write about animals you see in your nearest city. Where is their
usual habitat?
