Sacrament: means channel, representative, visible sign of an invisible reality

God Jesus Church

The Sacrament of God is Jesus and the Sacrament of Jesus is the Church (John 20:21, Acts 1:8). The Church started as a religious
renewal “movement”/group in Jerusalem, Israel by no other than Jesus Christ. Jesus grounded the Church on the foundation of the Apostles and it
spread from Jerusalem to the Roman Empire world until throughout all the earth.
The first “name” of the Church was The Way (Acts 9:2), The members of the Church were called Christians in Antioch (Acts 11: 26). The
Church was persecuted by the Roman Empire (which was still pagan) until the Conversion of the Emperor Constantine in 313 AD which paved the
way for Christians to infiltrate Rome until Christianity was declared as the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 AD by Emperor Theodosius.
Way back in 45 AD, the first apostle who went to Rome and started the Church there was no other than Peter. Later, reflecting on the mission
of Jesus which He passed on to the Church, the Church’s official “name” or title evolved into: One (John 17:21), Holy (Ephesians 1:4, 5:27, I Peter
2:9), Catholic (Matthew 28: 18-20, Acts 1:8, Gen 12: 3, John 3: 16-17) and Apostolic (Ephesians 2:20 )
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS:

German term: “Ursackrament”= “original sacrament”

We cannot talk about the Church
Jesus as the central sacrament who fully without talking about Jesus and
revealed God’s love to the world. we cannot talk about Jesus
Therefore:
without knowing about His
relationship to the Father.
KARL RAHNER- a famous theologian stated to Jesus as someone who fully manifested the
Presence to and actions of God to humanity.

German term: “Grundsackrament”= pinpoints to the “Church”

The prophets is the biblical tradition were called: “NEVIIM” which literally means “mouthpieces” of God.

God spoke to His people

through them.

Jesus relationship with God as His son is characterized by total unity with His Father.

When Phillip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus replied, “if
you have seen Me, you have seen the Father”

We have never seen God, but by looking at the life of Jesus, we have an idea of what kind of God the Father is.

For example, Si Nonito Donaire daw ang magiging next Manny

JESUS AND THE KINGDOM

In the synoptic gospels, the focus of the preaching and concern of Jesus is not the Church but by the kingdom or
reign of God.

JESUS AS THE
FOUDATION OF May plano noon si Jesus to start a church or a
THE CHURCH
group different from the religion who was brought up in
pero walang enough evidence to prove ito bakit?kasi
Jesus spent his whole life going to synagogue and
temple.

Synagogue are Jewish places of
study and worship.
Ano? Basa lang ng Basa? EMS ACTUALLY MAY DALAWANG
REASON..

FIRST.Noong na BOOGGSSHHHH si Jesus Christ (namatay). Hindi nagstop dun ang preaching about the Kingdom pf
God.

Jesus LIFE, MINISTRY, DEATH AND THE EXPERIENCE OF HIS RESURRECTION ang ginawa nilang bases para sa
mga early followers to form a community which is later known as the CHURCH.

SECOND. The story of SAINT LUKE (writer of Acts of the Apostles).

Sabi niya that the birth of the Church was during the PENTECOST EVENT. Paano? Ito yon, Nung namatay si Jesus,
natakot ang mga disciples kaya sila nag ran away because of the persecution. But, once the SPIRIT descended on
them, they became very courageous.

Yung SPIRIT na tinutukoy dito is Jesus’

Spirit na prinomise niya.
SCRIPTURAL IMAGE OF THE CHURCH

The LETTER OF SAINT PAUL are the oldest sources in the New testament to shed light on how the early Christians
defined their identity as CHURCH.

PEOPLE OF GOD TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BODY OF CHRIST

We are all the chosen people of God THE CHURCH IS THE TEMPLE OF SAINT PAUL- refers to the physical
THE HOLY SPIRIT structure of the human body and

The temple was a very important for responsibilities within the Christian
the jewish people. community.

WHY?

Jerusalem was revered because the

temple was there. It is there where
that the temple was built and
believed that God dwelt in there.

RELEVANCE OF THE SCRIPTURAL IMAGES FOR THE CHURCH TODAY

TALENTS ARE GIFTS FROM GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST GUIDED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.
-even though we have different talents there is equality and uniformity.m
So, how can we give back our talents to God? By ACTS OF SERVICE

But, during the time of Saint Paul, there is this misconception about talents.

WHAT? Those who have greater gifts are ranked higher in the community causing to establish a hierarchy.
This was then clarified by Saint Paul highlighting that there is no better gift than the other so no one is better than
the other one.

1. From an exclusive to more inclusive Church

HANS KUNG- a famous theologian who stated that if we go over the Bible says, we have to affirm that we are
A church of GOD, OF THE SPIRIT AND OF CHRIST.
Basta the main point of this is that lahat belong sa church kasi nga inclusive siya. So dito papasok yung NO
GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL HAVE THE PRIVELEGE TO DETERMINE WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO BE PART OF
THE CHURCH OR NOT.

So maski single ka, kasi feel mo walang nagmamahal sayo, eh deserve mo lang ata hahahahhahahaha
pasok ka padin sa Kingdom ni God.

2. From clericalization to community participation

Dito we are to compare the circular method to that of triangular method. Pag circle equal siya pag triangular may
hierarchy. So, to solve tha challenge which is the clericalization(rank), we should realize that all members and
leaders have the same dignity although they perform different function and roles.

Note: there should be no clericalization in the sense of considering the growth of the church as the sole
duty of the ordained ministry of the Church leadership because it is a shared responsibility.
3. From Sacralization to More Historical Perspective
Sacralization means making someone or something sacred.
Bakit nga ba challenge itong sacralization?
Tayo kasing mga Pilipino, we tend to be gullible and mabilis tayomg maniwala without looking into roots or how a
thing or someone is being held sacred. Eh diba we only consider something of someone sacred if:
Discretion ng Vatican II
Upon the say of the Pope
So may proseso lapa hindi yung porke may image na nabuo sa oader eh we worship such thing.

And people there even sa other places eh pumupunta dun to pray and to get some water only to find out na galing
sa leaked ng kebuta. So imagine?

4. From an Idealized Picture to more Realistic Assessment of the Church

Yung ideal church kasi natin eh we are for a PERFECT Church pero wala namang church na perfect because
challenges and hindrances inside and outside of the church are inevitable.
WEEK 4: THE CHURCH ACCORDING TO THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL
Jesus washes the Disciples’ Feet (John 13:12-15)- Humble Service.
The story happens Jewish context. Si St. Peter po ang nagrefused to have Jesus wash his feet.

Second Vatican Council- gather Church leaders all over the world to assess what was happening and to read the signs of the times.

John XXIII (now St John XIII) convened the council envisioned an aggiornamento within the church. Nagkaroon ng fresh dialogue sa ibang Churches.

Vatican II documents, Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes, provide insights into the scriptural image of the Church as people of God.
Recall: LG- Dogmatic Constitution of the Church- you can’t question the practices.
GS- Pastoral Constitution of the Church Modern World.

2. Church as Servant

- The church exists to serve and not to be served.
- GS states that “The Church seeks a solitary goal: to carry forward the work of Christ Himself under the lead of befriending Spirit.
- Bishop Bacani said that the aspect in the Filipino life that needs evangelizing the most is political.

Week 5

- Unity and Variety (I Corinthians 12:4-14) – Church’s unity.

- Vatican II and PCP II teach the Church is ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, and APOSTOLIC.
- These characteristics are gifts, tasks, and hopes or promises.

1. The Church is One

- Chruch was divided because of heresy, apostasy and schisms even blasphemy.
 Heresy- opinion contrary. (Example: Abortion,
killing is bad. Commandment, Thou shall not Kill.)
 Apostasy- Refusing the religious faith.
 Schisms- Division or gap. (Ex: Church and States)
- Ecumenical Movement- promoting unity among the world.
- Church is one- This means that it is a single, united and global Church which has its basis in Christ Jesus.
- Unity is not uniformity- we are many but we form one body kaya ang isipin ay dapat “unity in diversity”
- Dapat isipin din nation yung those who are suffering, sick and oppressed. Ito na yung tinatwag natin na “preferential option of the poor”
- Unity is a gift, oneness of the Church as the body of Christ is a task.
saying nireremind tayo na God has given us talents and abilities.
- FABC- talks about 3 dialogues that the Christian Churches have to engage in here in Asia: Dialogue with other religions, dialogue with
cultures and dialogue with the poor.
- Since unity is a task, then it is a hope kasi nga it unites us all in the final kingdom. Ang key word lang naman jan UNITY. UNITY, UNITY. WAG MO
KAKALIMUTAN YAN.

2. The Church is Holy

- Hindi porket Church is holy, sinless na tayo. Tandaan pati po mga kings, prophets, and priest natin is an example of not a perfect people of God kay we
should work about holiness.
- Holy- “katad” implies separation or set-apartness.
- Katad means they are set apart to serve God. Sabi rito in serving God and serving peple makes us True Holy so anong gagawing we should be a
perfect reflection of Jesus Christ.
- Both leader and member need a constant renewal to change the changing situation.
- “The Church, embracing sinners in her bosom, is at the same time holy and always in need of being purified, and incessantly pursues the path of
penance and renewal.” – LG
- Tandaan, task din po ang holiness kasi nga ito yung challenge to love and serve others.
- The Church is Holy, because it is the Body of Christ with Jesus is the Head (naalala niyo yung drawing yan yung sinsabi niya). Sa concept na ito ang
Church and her sacraments help to make the faithful holy. Kasi nga Church is a Sinful Hospital, it does not speak physical restoration but also a spiritual
aspect.

3. The Church is Catholic

Halimbawa:
1. Yung ibang religion at religion natin ang layuni is salvation so meaning kahit magkakaiba tayo same parin yung gusto natin makamit.
- Catholic means “UNIVERSAL,” the role of the Church is to spread the Word of God universally across the world. Meaning all-embracing. Lahat kasali.
Parang sa school lang natin, kahit Catholic school ay nakakapag-aral pa ang mga non-catholic kasi nga we are embracing and including all in all. Key
word UNIVERSAL, UNIVERSAL, UNIVERSAL.

4. The Church is Apostolic

- Keyword, MISSIONARY
- The origins and beliefs of the church started out with the apostles at Pentecost.
- When the Holy Spirit comes, you shall be my witnesses.
- It is the whole Church and not only the leaders who are apostolic in the sense that all Christians have the responsibility to witness to Jesus through
variety of means.
- If the whole Church is apostolic, how do we look at the role of the hierarchy?
mission. In this, leadership is important and necessary.
 “Apostolate”, means the work of all the faithful who carry on the original mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles.

Religious Education is a significant avenue for evangelization. Evangelization is considered the task and mission of all Christian. It is an integral
dimension of the Church's evangelizing mission.
Nature and Aim of Religious Education
1. Information - imparting basic information about the Christian/Catholic faith, which includes statements and explanations of doctrine and official
teaching, creeds of belief, moral values, historical information, Scripture, Sacraments, and liturgical celebrations.
2. Formation- "the level of affect, or emotion, or value”.
3. Transformation- "develop and renew their faith to make a personal commitment to Jesus, a commitment that involves knowledge and gut-level
emotion, a commitment that makes Jesus Christ become real and present in every aspect of life and fills that life with meaning."

Four Components of Christian Formation

1. Prayer and Liturgy – Prayer, means serve awareness to the presence of God.
- Liturgy, highest form of prayer (Example: Mass- shortest commemoration of Jesus Christ)
2. Religious Education- To transform knowledge into wisdom of life.
3. Social Involvement- Bringing transformation in our community. (Ex: Acts of Charity, Tree planting, SLP)
4. Vocation Mission-Animation- response to call of God.
