Banksy is probably one of the most notorious names in the world of modern art, but what do
we know about the person who creates thought-provoking pieces of art on the street?

Banksy has kept his identity a secret for so many years thanks to a combination of careful
planning and a circle of very close friends he can trust.
But, there are a few details out there about this mysterious artist. We know that Banksy is from
the United Kingdom, where he started as a young artist creating graffiti across the city of Bristol
in the 1990s. He later moved into more sophisticated works, before becoming the street artist
we know today.

Banksy’s most famous work is called Girl With Balloon. The image
is simple, it has a young girl reaching for a red, heart-shaped
balloon that seems to be floating away. People in Britain love this
graffiti, and according to a survey done in 2017, this is their
favourite work of art. Different versions of Girl with Balloon, have
been produced by Banksy for over twenty-years.

In 2006, in an anonymous interview with Swindle magazine, Banksy said: "I came from a small
city in southern England. When I was about ten years old, a kid called 3D was painting the
streets everywhere. I had never seen graffiti before. Spray painting was the thing we all loved
at school. We did it on the bus on the way home from school. Everyone was doing it.”

Banksy has taken his art to Paris, New York and Palestine, where he opened the Walled Off Hotel
in 2017. This hotel contains many of his paintings and other street artists’.

There are many theories about Banksy, but most people believe the artist is a man called Robin
Gunningham. Gunningham was born in 1973 in Yate, just near Bristol, and many of his
schoolmates say they believe him to be Banksy. Gunningham was a gifted illustrator at school,
often drawing cartoons of very good quality, and Banksy has confirmed that his love for drawing
first appeared during his school years.

3
Many people want to know why he doesn’t reveal his identity to the public. An explanation could
be that some things he does are illegal. Banksy’s public works are usually done at night and
without permission.
