CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON WAVE POWER
POTENTIAL Abstract: Among numerous forms of renewable energy, wave energy is widely available and contains the highest energy density worldwide. Understanding the spatio-temporal ocean wave climate is essential to determine wave power potential at a give region. It is well understood that ocean waves may vary at a range of timescales from a few days to a few years, as a result of extreme events such as storms and tropical and extra-tropical cyclones, seasonal events such as tropical monsoons, and annual/inter-annual regional climatic variabilities. Furthermore, a wave climate can be altered at much longer term as a result of global climate change. In this study we explore the implications of potential shifts to sea state and its implication on wave power potential around a tropical island in the Indian ocean as a result of global climate change, with the emphasis on tropical monsoons.
