PROBUS CLUB OF THE HILLS INC
ESTABLISHED JUNE 1989

PRESIDENT EVELYN’S MESSAGE

August was such an exciting month with the women’s soccer. Whether you're a sports lover or not,
who could help but join in the excitement of the Matildas reaching the quarter finals. What a
wonderful time it's been for women's soccer and what a way to bring a nation together. It has
certainly put women's soccer and sports on the world's map and showcased Australia to the world.
What a great result for Spain.

It was wonderful to see so many of our members attend the meeting in August and especially to be
honoured by a visit from an old member Terry who was 90 and made the effort to join us. We also
had two more visitors, Tom and Diane Ford. I hope they also enjoyed the meeting and speaker
Peter Kahn and his film and talk on old trams. I'm sure it brought back old memories for everyone
who could remember the trams running. Now we are busy bringing them back!

As I mentioned last month, four committee members, along with myself, attended the Probus
Waitara Information and Partner Day. There were forty different Probus groups who discussed
many aspects of Probus and the different ways that groups ran their clubs. It was an informative
day and, from what I can see, we are doing as well as any other club. Everyone seemed to have
the same issues with ageing memberships and recruiting new members. Eddie Patterson is way
ahead with his spread sheets and all the work he has done to make our club more efficient. My
thanks to Dorothy Scott. Jeannie Biscoe. Bob Heyward and Eddie Patterson for going along to
represent our club.

The Auxiliary groups are still enjoying good representation. Especially now with warmer weather
coming, we look forward to seeing more people taking part. Please keep putting ideas for outings
or small groups in the suggestion box as this is what keeps our club interesting. My thanks to
Ralph Stone who organized the walking along with a visit to the female factory.

Ralph has kindly offered to do the walking group to Wisteria gardens in September. With the
beautiful spring weather this will be a great opportunity for you all to enjoy a day out whilst I am
trying to enjoy myself on my European cruise.
We still have a Mystery Tour to look forward to in September so check that your name is on the list.

I will be away for the September meeting as we are off to the UK and a few other places. So, with
our bags all packed and a suitcase full of pills and potions to cover any emergency, we will leave
on the 29th of August provided we are not detained for trying to smuggle drugs out of the country.
The September meeting will be chaired by Vice President Dorothy Scott and Secretary Trevor
Laird.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Mystery Tour in late September and as many as can
possibly attend our October meeting.

MEMBERS REPORT

Not too many highlights to report this month. With regret we have received the resignation of two
members caused by medical issues which prevents them attending our meetings. They are
Michael Spiteri and Denis Gibson to whom we wish improved health in their future.

We have had a number of enquiries from couples and a male colleague who may attend next
month’s meeting. We are sitting with a healthy total of seventy three active members who provided
a good strong roll up at our last meeting.

The only congestion occurred at morning tea as the limited time frame makes it difficult for
everyone to access the morning tea table. To help this process Bob Ryan and Victor Dalzell have
put up their hands to have it laid out better which should quicken the flow. Another two assistants
would be most helpful in fast tracking the process.

As stated last month a group of five (5) attended the Information and Partners Day. Overall it was
rather disappointing but we managed to get some useful information and realise we as a Club are
in a healthy position compared to many others.

Finally, it is important to remember we all have a responsibility to welcome newcomers to our

Club. Please make them feel at home once they walk through the doors.

SNOOKER REPORT

There were only two visits to the tables this month. The first visit saw Chester bring along his Kelly
Pool balls. He, along with Gordon and I, enjoyed a competitive morning of pool and it was different
to our normal games of snooker. We all managed to find our own ball for wins but again Chester
came out on top of a good mornings fun.

For week two, there were four of us who attended and partnered up in three competitive games of
traditional snooker. Chester and I teamed up against Gordon and Ralph for a comfortable win then
Ralph and I gave the other pair a run for their money all in the name of fun which is what it is all
about.

So, why not come along and find out, as you may enjoy a change.

SPEAKERS

Our Guest Speaker for September is Deborah Wallace.

She joined the NSW Police Force in 1983, starting at the Blacktown station. She gained notoriety
early in her career when she was involved in the investigation into the murder of Anita Cobby.
Deborah rose in the ranks to detective superintendent and commanded various specialist squads,
including the South East Asian Crime Squad, Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad and Strike
Force Raptor. She retired in December 2019.

Deborah has spoken at our Club before and was found to be entertaining as well as very
interesting. I'm sure she will not disappoint us.

WALKING GROUP

September 21: The wisteria and spring flowers will be in full bloom in the gardens of Cumberland
Hospital when we meet at 10.30 a.m. at the gardens entrance in Parramatta Park. Easiest access
is via the Westmead gates which open at 10.00a.m. Free Parking for 2 and 3 hours (near the flying
foxes) is available in the park either side of the gardens entrance.

If you are energetic, afterwards you can follow the river for one kilometre around to the main park
gates where coffee and toasties, hamburgers, gozleme etc are available. Or, drive 2 kms to the
now fully restored historic Female factory precinct in Fleet Street and enjoy fish and chips at the
beautiful Havenstone Café . That’s where Rhonda and I will be heading.

October 20: Evelyn will be leading the walk around the Japanese Gardens at Auburn. Perhaps
lunch afterwards at one of the many Turkish & Persian cafes and restaurants in Auburn township?

BAREFOOT BOWLS

On a beautiful, balmy afternoon of 20-22 degrees in the sunshine, eight of us played bowls
at the Baulkham Hills Bowls Club. on the grass green, with bowls supplied by the club.

We played with 4 teams of 2 players, making up two games of pairs. Chester, Bob H and Bob R
and myself played as the skips.

Special mention must be made of how well all played after some not so good bowls in the past.
That small side of the bowl must go on the inside for the bias to work on the bowl correctly, and
make the bowls go near that "little white one'' down the other end of the green. As we say there
are only two things to get correct when you throw a bowl - your weight and grass.

Everybody enjoyed a great day with good competition between teams.

All members are very welcome to come along to the bowls which we hold each month, on the
Thursday afternoon the week after our Probus meeting. Our starting time is to get there about
2 pm for a 2.30 pm start. Just wear some flat soled footwear (or joggers) so we can bowl on the
grass green.
te

We enjoyed a few social drinks in the club afterwards and three couples even stayed for dinner at
the club.

We had "seniors' meals" : chicken schnitzel, chips and salad; and a roast and veg. for just $13.50
each. Recommended for a meal out.

All are very welcome . and a great day was had by all.
