outcomes of chance experiments with equally likely outcomes and assign probabilities
between 0 and 1. Students pose questions to gather data, and construct data displays
appropriate for the data.
By the end of Year 6, students recognise the properties of prime, composite, square

and decimals. Students connect decimal representations to the metric system and
choose appropriate units of measurement to perform a calculation. They make connec-
tions between capacity and volume. They solve problems involving length and area.
They interpret timetables. Students describe combinations of transformations. They
solve problems using the properties of angles. Students compare observed and ex-
pected frequencies. They interpret and compare a variety of data displays including
those displays for two categorical variables. They interpret secondary data displayed in
the media.
Students locate fractions and integers on a number line. They calculate a simple frac-
tion of a quantity. They add, subtract and multiply decimals and divide decimals where
the result is rational. Students calculate common percentage discounts on sale items.
They write correct number sentences using brackets and order of operations. Students
locate an ordered pair in any one of the four quadrants on the Cartesian plane. They
construct simple prisms and pyramids. Students describe probabilities using simple
fractions, decimals and percentages.

Overview of Unit
Students will learn how to plot points on a Cartesian plane, read and write coordinates.
They will also learn how Cartesian planes are used in real world situations. Throughout
the unit, students will have opportunities to practice their skills through individual
work, group games, class discussion and pairing and sharing activities. . By the end of
the unit, students will have a solid foundation in the principles of Cartesian planes, in-
cluding the four quadrants and the importance of the X and Y axes, as well as the abil-
ity to identify positive and negative values.

faced during the activity and address any confusion or
questions that students may have.

the simple shape of a dogs head. The will label each point A,B,C, D etc. They
will use correct symbols and brackets for (x,y).
• Robots on a Cartesian plane: Students will draw a more complex shape in the
form of a robot on a cartesian plane. They will label each quadrant and X and Y

sesses their understanding of the key concepts covered in the unit, such as
plotting points.
• Exit Tickets: At the end of each lesson, students can complete an exit ticket
that asks them to identify key concepts or solve a problem related to the day's
lesson.
• Peer Feedback: During group work or in-class activities, students can provide
feedback to each other on their work, such as identifying errors in plotting
points or calculating distances.
Summative Assessment:
• At the end of the unit, students will draw their own picture and label the coordi-
nates. These will be able to be shared with another student to see whether the
shape or picture can be plotted.
