Learning Context: Common Module –Texts and Human Experiences

Students have been studying ‘The Crucible’, other shorter texts and a related text as part of the Texts and Human
experiences common module. In doing so, they have continued to develop their skills in textual analysis, deepening
their understanding of how texts represent a diverse range of individual and collective human experiences.

Task Number: 1 Weighting: 20% Date: Thursday December 8

Week 9, Term 4 2022

In-Class Extended Response - essay

Time Allowed: 50 mins. No notes can be brought into the exam.

Task Instructions:

Compose an extended response in class, of at least 5 paragraphs to the question below.

How do The Crucible and your related text represent the emotions arising from human
experiences through their textual features?

(N.B: the textual features for The Crucible are the features of drama. You will need to discuss
the specific textual features of your related text too).

Your extended response should have a clear thesis and close analysis of The Crucible, as well as a
related text of your own choosing. Select a related text that can easily be connected to The Crucible in
terms of human experiences, themes, style, context and/or values.

Aim to write a minimum of 5 structured paragraphs, using quotations, techniques and explanations of
these.

Milestone: In the weeks leading up to the task you will be asked to provide a written draft of the
introduction and one body paragraph. This will provide you with an opportunity for feedback on your
progress.

In this task, you will be assessed on your ability to:

understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure

EA12-3 critically analyses and uses language forms, features and structures of texts
justifying appropriateness for specific purposes, audiences and contexts and
evaluates their effects on meaning

EA12-6 investigate and explain the relationships between texts.

EA12-7 evaluates the diverse ways texts can represent personal and public worlds and
recognises how they are valued

Illness and Misadventure:
