Did you know that…

Electricity is measured in units of

power called “watts”. A watt is a

small amount of energy and was

named to honor James Watt, the

inventor of the steam engine.

1. Ampere (A)
medir

The electrical unit of electrical current. It measures

fluir

the amount of electrical charge that flows in an

electrical circuit per 1 second: 1A = 1C / 1s
• Electrical current is the flow rate of electric
charge in electric field, usually in electrical
circuit and is measured in ampere (amp) unit by
the rate of electric charge flow in an electrical
circuit: i(t) = dQ(t) / dt

2. Volt (V)

Volt is the electrical unit of voltage. One

volt is the energy of 1 joule and is
consumed when electric charge of 1
coulombio
coulomb flows in the circuit: 1V = 1J / 1C
• Electrical voltage is the electric
potential difference between two
points of an electric field: V = φ2 - φ1

3. Ohm (Ω)

Ohm is the electrical unit of resistance

and was named after George Simon
Ohm: 1Ω = 1V / 1A

• Resistance is an electrical quantity

that measures how the device or
material reduces the electric current
flow through it and is measured in
units of ohms (Ω).

4. Watt (W)

Watt is the electrical unit of electric

power. It measures the rate of
consumed energy:
1W = 1J / 1s
1W = 1V ⋅ 1A
• Electric power is the rate of energy
consumption in an electrical circuit
and is measured in units of watts.

5. Decibel-milliwatt or dBm
Decibel-milliwatt or dBm is a unit of
electric power, measured with
logarithmic scale referenced to 1mW:
10dBm = 10 ⋅ log10(10mW / 1mW)

• Electric power is the rate of energy

consumption in an electrical circuit
and is measured in units of watts.

6. Decibel-watt or dBW

Decibel-watt or dBW is a unit of electric

power, measured with logarithmic scale
referenced to 1W:
10dBW = 10 ⋅ log10(10W / 1W)
• Electric power is the rate of energy
consumption in an electrical circuit and
is measured in units of watts.

7. Farad (F) Faradios

Farad is the unit of capacitance. It represents the

amount of electric charge in coulombs that is
stored per 1 volt: 1F = 1C / 1V
The capacitance is the amount of electric charge
that is stored in the capacitor at voltage of 1 Volt.
condensador

Capacitor is an electronic component that stores

electric charge. The capacitor is made of 2 close
conductors (usually plates) that are separated by
a dielectric material.

8. Henry (H)
ncia

Is the unit of inductance: 1H = 1Wb / 1A

• The inductance is measured in units of
Henry [L]. henrio

• Inductor is an electrical component

that stores energy in magnetic field
bobina

and is made of a coil of conducting

wire. Inductor reduces current in AC
circuits and short circuit in DC circuits.

9. Coulomb (C)
Coulomb is the unit of electric charge:
1C = 6.238792×1018 electron charges
• Electric charge generates electric field, influence
other electric charges with electric force and
influenced by the other charges with the same
force in the opposite direction. There are 2
types: Positive charge (+) has more protons than
electrons (Np>Ne) and Negative charge (-) has
more electrons than protons (Ne>Np).

10. Joule (J)
Joule is the unit of energy: J = 1 kg ⋅ m2 / s2

11. Weber (Wb) weber

Weber is the unit of magnetic flux: 1Wb = 1V ⋅ 1s

12. Tesla (T)

Tesla is the unit of magnetic field: 1T = 1Wb / 1m2

13. Hertz (Hz)

Hertz is the unit of frequency. It measures the
number of cycles per second: 1 Hz = 1 cycles / s

Conclusions
Electrical Units of Measurement are used to express standard electrical units
along with their prefixes when the units are too small or too large to express as
a base unit. The standard electrical units of measure used for the expression of
voltage, current and resistance are the Volt [ V ], Ampere [ A ] and Ohm [ Ω ]
respectively and are based on the International (metric) System (SI System).
Sometimes in electrical or electronic circuits and systems it is necessary to use
multiples or sub-multiples (fractions) of these standard electrical measuring
units when the quantities being measured are very large or very small.
