iv
What I Need to Know

This module is designed to introduce to you on how you propagate trees and fruit-
bearing trees, using appropriate tools and safety measure in propagation. It will
emphasize the importance of planting and propagation of trees and fruit-bearing
trees. You will also perform systematic and scientific ways of caring for orchard trees
and seedlings.

After this module, you are challenge to:

1. Propagate trees and fruit-bearing trees using scientific processes
(TLEAG-0d-5);
2. Identify the appropriate tools and equipment in plant propagation and
their uses (TLEAG-0d-5);
3. Demonstrate scientific ways of propagating fruit bearing trees
(TLEAG-0d-5); and
4. Observe healthy and safety measures in propagating fruit-bearing trees
(TLEAG-0d-5).

Lesson Planting and Propagating
1 Trees and Fruit Bearing
Trees
Planting and propagating trees and fruit-bearing trees is one way of making food
available to everyone regardless of one’s social or economic status. A backyard lot is
enough to plant and cultivate fruit trees or vegetables. Aside from being economical,
planting fruit trees can also be recreational for every family member to get occupied
with during their free time at home.

What’s In

Put a in the blank if the statement is for preparing an orchard layout and

if not.

_____1. Create planting system.

_____2. Check the soil according to type.

_____3. No water source and drainage.

_____4. Sufficient sunlight.

_____5. Non-access to market.

4
What’s New

There are two ways of planting trees. The first is through direct seedling, which
makes use of seeds and directly planting them into the plot or garden area. The
problem with this method is that it may take very long for the trees to start bearing
fruit. They can take up to more than a decade to bear fruits and the quality of the
fruit may or may not be the same as those from which the seeds were taken.

Direct Seedling

Indirect Planting

Another method is through indirect planting, also called transplanting. In this

method, part of a plant, pre-groom seedlings or plants propagated from seeds are
planted initially in a seed bed or seed box before transferring it to the permanent
plot or garden area once it grown.

5
There are two types of plant propagation:

1. Sexual Propagation – propagation using valuable seeds. These seeds have the
capacity to germinate and grow.

2. Asexual Propagation - is the production of new plants from leaves, stems and
roots. It can be done manually, either naturally or using scientific approach.

Here are the examples:

a. T-budding – is a method in which two plant parts, the mature lateral bud from a
scion is attached to another plant of the same family, which eventually produces a
sprout to form a new plant.

6
b. Marcotting - a method that allows the stem to develop roots while still on the
mother plant.

c. Cleft Grafting - a method wherein the union of a scion from a mature plant and
a stock from a seedling of same plant family, allow the growth of a new plant.

7
Appropriate Tools and Equipment in Plant Propagation and Their Uses

Here are some tools and equipment used for plant propagation:

1. Pruning Shear– is used for cutting small branches including the unnecessary
branches.

2. Knife – is used for cutting and slicing planting materials.

3. Sprinkler – is used to water seedlings and young plants.

4. Garden Scissor– is used for cutting grass and shaping the plant or shrub.

8
5. match –is used for marcotting or air layering.

6. Tape – is used to keep wrapper in placed.

7. Rooting hormone –is used to promote growth.

8.Pot- is used for young newly-rooted plants.

9
Healthy and Safety Measures in Propagating Trees and Fruit-Bearing Tress

1. Before working, make sure you take a bath in order to work well.
2. Always wear complete personal protective equipment which includes hair
net, hand gloves, apron, boots if needed, protective eye glass and face mask.
3.Make sure tools and equipment are working properly before using them.
4. Always follow instructions for the use of equipment.
5. Focus on the work at hand. Do not allow yourself to get distracted.
6. Know your limits in working; seek help whenever necessary.
7. Work in proper position. Make sure you do not strain your back while
workin

What is It

1. What are the two ways of planting trees?

2. Which one do you prefer and why?
3. What are the two types of plant propagation?
4. What are the example of asexual propagation
5. Why is it important to follow systematic and scientific process in planting
and propagating trees and fruit-bearing trees?
6. What are the tools and equipment in propagating trees and fruit-bearing
trees?
7. What is the function of each tools in propagation?
8.Why do you need follow safety measures in propagating trees and fruit-
bearing trees?

What’s More

Form a group of five members each. With your teacher’s guidance, practice different
methods of propagation. Follow the instructions carefully.

Group I: T-Budding
Example of type of plant for this method: Pomelo and Calamansi Trees
Tools and Materials:
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment * Cellophane
apron * Cutter/ Grafting Knife

10
Hand gloves
Working attire

Safety Precaution

Procedure:

1. Wear your PPE.

2. Prepare the tools and materials needed.
3. Remove the lateral bud from the scion using the cutter.
4. Make an inverted T slice on the bark of another plant. Insert the bud, and
then tie it firmly but leave the bud exposed.
5. Immediate and quick process of budding should be done because buds
easily dry up.
6. Union may take about 15 days or more. The inserted bud will remain green
or brownish depending on its natural color. You will know if the union is
unsuccessful if the bud turns black and rots.

Group II – Cleft Grafting

Example of type of plant for this method: Mango and Avocado Trees

Tools and Materials:

 Pruning Shears Scion obtains from mature plant

 Cellophane PPE
 Grafting knife/cutter Stock a mature seedling

Safety Precaution

Procedure:

1. Wear your PPE.

2. Prepare all tools and materials needed.
3. Clean the rootstock. Create a split about six inches down. Leave a wedge or
other similar tool to hold open the cleft center.
4. Make long tapering wedge on the base of each scion to fit into the cleft.
5.Insert the scions deeply so that their wedge bottoms are completely
embedded. One scion should be on each side of the cleft. The cambia of the
scions and rootstock must be aligned and in maximum contact to ensure
union.

11
6. Once the scions are properly inserted and aligned, carefully remove the
wedge holding the cleft open. Seal the unions with wax or soil to prevent
drying.
7. If the scion survives, only the stronger, healthier one is kept and the other
is removed.

Group III- Marcotting

Example of type of plant for this method: Calamansi trees

Tools and Materials:

 Sphagnum moss/coconut husk PPE

 Cutter/grafting knife water
 Cellophane Small Basin
 Tie

Safety Precaution

Procedure:

1.Wear your PPE.

2. Prepare the tools and materials needed.
3. Use tools according to each function.
4. Soak the sphagnum moss/ coconut husk in a basin of water.
5. Use the tie to measure the circumference of the stem. The length from the
measured circumference is now the basis of cut to be made.
6. Make a horizontal cut using cutter. Perform rounded cut from top to bottom
in both ends of the first cut.
7. Carefully remove the bark with your hand.
8. Using the cutter, scrape the cambium layer. This is a slimy secretion
responsible for repairing the wounded plant parts.
9. Place the sphagnum moss or coconut husk to the scraped area then wrap
it with cellophane or plastic and tie both ends.

Identify what is being describe in each sentence.
