Mistake 1
Uploading Unnecessary
Documentation
Know the documents you need to provide
according to the stream (Student Direct Stream
(SDS)or Non-SDS)

a. For SDS – do not provide unnecessary documents

like the net worth statement, property ownership,
CA Letter, etc.
b. For Non-SDS – feel free to provide as much
documentation as possible

Only recent transcripts are required

a. If you are applying for a postgraduate diploma or

master's, there is no need to upload 10th and 12th
mark sheets
b. Professional certifications are given much less
weightage. Avoid uploading vocational
certificates, unless they add value to your
argument about the progression of studies

Mistake 2
Using the old portal (GC Key)
when you have a sibling in
Canada

IRCC launched a new portal for study permit applications

in September 2021. You do not need to file the
application under GC Key anymore unless you have
accompanying family members.

Although you are allowed to file using GC Key, you end up

providing information about siblings – which is not asked
in the new portal. If you have a sibling in Canada, this
could affect your chances adversely
Mistake 3
Showing backlogs to the visa
officer

If you have many backlogs in your bachelor's degree,

rather than uploading all individual semester mark sheets
in the visa application, you can get an official transcript
from your university and upload it. If you have a
consolidated mark sheet (CMM), it works as well. No need
to upload semester mark sheets if you can upload
transcripts or CMM
Mistake 4
SOP: talking more about the
past, and less about future

Remember, the SOP needs to be forward-looking. While

your background is required for the visa officer to
understand your decision, it needs to be concise and
restricted to 1 or 2 paragraphs. 80% of your SOP needs to
talk about future goals, learning outcomes, reasons for
returning, return on investment, etc.
Mistake 5
SOP: Bad text alignment,
unnecessary formatting
(bold/underline/italics)

A visa officer looks at hundreds of documents each day.

The last thing they want to see is a document with
excessive formatting, giving them sore eyes. Keep the
formatting for headings only, and bring the most
important stuff on page one of the SOP. Similarly, try to
“justify” text alignment so it looks aesthetic and clean
Mistake 6

Too much general text in SOP

Visa SOP needs to be customized and specific to your

decision, goals, rationale, and logic. Most students use an
SOP format from Google and use the general text it
comes with. Many others use the services of “content
writers”, not realizing these writers sell similar SOPs to
hundreds, and probably even take the same format from
Google.

Once you are done writing SOP, read it again and try to
highlight the text which doesn’t talk about your specific
cases, such as the growth of the Indian economy, a
specific sector, public domain reports about a
profession, etc. If this text constitutes more than 5% of
your total word count, you need to reduce it.
Mistake 7
SOP: Using incorrect
terminologies and stating the
obvious
1. Understand the difference between a PG diploma,
master, College Diploma, Graduate Certificate, College
Certificate, Bachelor, and Associate Degree. Use the
correct terminology – you can easily get the relevant one
from your LOA.
2. When you write something about Canada, the
institution, or the program – make sure to do enough
research so you don’t exaggerate or understate facts.
Such mistakes are easily caught and will prove your
inadequate research, prompting visa officer to doubt
your intentions
3. You don’t need to state the obvious by explaining
documents, e.g. GIC amount, IELTS score, subject-wise
grade achievement (overall GPA is fine), etc. Be assured
all documents are rigorously examined by the visa officer
and you don’t need to waste space on SOP explaining
them.
