She is suffering ...
And mailing you a nickel won’t help. Some groups will glue a nickel to their letters to get your attention
At PCRM, we'd rather USE that nickel to save a dog like Queenie ..
we think you would, too
Dear Friend,
With a name like Queenie, you"d think this sweet Dalmatian mix with hopeful eyes
‘might have a pampered life. But her life was nothing short of torture.
Queenie was sold to a university laboratory that performs cruel, unnecessary
experiments on live animals. In the lab, Queenie and countless other healthy dogs were cut
open, devices were implanted into their hearts and blood vessels, and then they were forced to
run on treadmills
Her face and paws swelled. She whined, she vomited, and fluids leaked from her
wounds,
Did they stop to save this poor dog from pain? No, Instead they forced her to run the
treadmill again,
‘Then they induced hypertension in Queenie by reducing the flow of blood to her
kidneys. It was noted that she was “acting very timid ... shakes while getting up ... won't get
up for me.” But that same day, they still made her run,
Even after Queenie’ leg gat caught in the treadmill. she was forced ton injured,
Aiptocing and limping as best she could. Then, aftec nine torturous months in their “care.” they
Killed her.
Asa physician, as a human being, Lam appalled by stories like Queenie’s. Using
and abusing innocent animals in the name of seience or education is just plain wrong ~
especially since there are superior, readily available nonanimal alternatives. Don’t you agree?
‘Then please join me today. The Physicians Commitee for Responsible Medicine
(PCRM) is doing everything in our power to stop the use and abuse of animals in medical
school, corporate, and hospital laboratories nationwide
You can help by mailing your tax-deduetible donation of $20 or more right away.
We'll put your gift to immediate use in all of our lifesaving work.
‘And please sign and return the enclosed petition to the National Institutes of
Health (NIH). They've been funding experiment that Killed Queenie with
millions of dollars

We urgently need more compassionate people like you to join us ~ and speak on behalf
of animals like Queenie, who cannot speak for themselves.
1 promise that your support today will make a difference ~ and we have the track record
to prove it. Since I founded PCRM 27 years ago, our campaign to end the use of live animal
Jabs in medical schools has convinced more than 95 percent of schools to stop using animals.
One of our earliest victories was when we persuaded the University of California, San
Diego School of Medicine to stop training practices that had students performing invasive
procedures on live dogs.
Before PCRM intervened, dogs were used in six-hour teaching exercises, and then
disposed of once the class ended. You can imagine how many dogs were needlessly killed
‘And when PCRM learned that live pigs were being used at the University of Wisconsin
‘School of Medicine and Public Health, we jumped into action, First-year medical students at this
school performed invasive procedures on live pigs, including opening the animals’ chest cavities,
before they were bled out. Thanks to our efforts, animals are no longer being used.
And this past summer, PCRM made stunning progress, convincing six more medical
centers to stop using cats — in some cases even kittens — or ferrels to teach endotracheal
‘intubation to pediatris residents.
Atthese medical centers, future pediatricians would force plastic tubes down the airways
of these poor animals ~ as often as 22 times a day ~ even though the anatomical differences
between animals and human babies render this type of training ineffective. The kittens risked
suffering tracheal bruising, bleeding, scarring, airway swelling, and severe pain.
‘What makes their suffering even more senseless is that there are state-of-the-art medical
simulators based on human anatomy that are much more effective in teaching intubation methods,
It took the persistence of PCRM and our team-building approach that rallies support
from concerned citizens like you, as well as the medical community, to finally convince
‘these medical centers to embrace this new technology and stop needlessly abusing kittens,
Years of hard work go into every PCRM campaign — and we depend on people like you.
to help us win, People like you, who agree that inflicting pain on animals cannot be tolerated any
longer. It's simply unconscionable,
Let me give you a better idea of how we work to save animals in medical school labs.
First we take a collaborative approach, We meet with the instructors teaching ive animal

labs and educate them about nonanimal teaching methods, including medical simulators that
make animal abuse in laboratories obsolete.
‘We encourage them to respond to student pressure calling for an end to cruelty in
their courses —and listen to physicians and residents who want their campus labs to be free of
abused animals,
If collaboration doesn’t work, PCRM tums up the heat
‘We contact department chairs and school administrators and attempt to arrange
high-level meetings to make our case against animal use. And we start mobilizing community
support ~ including support from local physicians ~ with signs, billboards, door-to-door
‘campaigning, and press conferences. Nationally, PCRM reaches out for help via-mail, e-meil,
and social media.
his is where grassroots support, like your
real difference.
1ed petition tothe.
Asa last resort, PCRM takes legal action against medical schools that have resisted
all effort to stop their live animal labs ~ on the grounds that this heinous practice violates the
federal Animal Welfare Act,
‘Our unique approach works. Most of the nation’s leading medical schools ~ like Yale,
Columbia, and Stanford — have stopped using live animals.
Yet there are still five U.S. medical schools using live animals. And PCRM will not
4quit this campaign until the last school complies with the federal Animal Welfare Act. The
remaining schools have dug in their heels. And they have the finances to carry this fight forward
So PCRM must rally support from caring people like you,
Will you stand with us inthis effort by sending your donation of $20 or more? Together
‘we can free innocent animals who are right now being needlessly injected, cut, mutilated, and
killed .. just like Queenie.
‘Your donation will also help CRM demonstrate to chemical and pharmaceutical
‘companies that they can reduce and even eliminate the number of animals they use in toxicity
testing... speak out against public health risks posed by unethical research ... and promote
nutrition policies and practices that are healthier for our society and save animals’ lives.
Together we can open the eyes of universities reluctant to change their ways. We can
stand up against well-hecled special interests and corporations. Ve can prove that compassion
‘wins out over cruelty, and that justice wins out even for animals helpless to defend themselves.

He can ~ but only if you stand together with PCRM against those who would hide
behind the cloak of “research” and brutalize animals when there are better, more humane
‘options available,
Animals like Queenie deserve compassion. They ache for gentleness, kindness — any
reason to wag their tals. They ask for so litle and they offer so much in return,
Please help us help them.
I know many organizations feel they have to glue nickels to their letters to persuade you to
Join their cause. But I believe that people who want to truly make a difference would
rather see that nickel put toward saving lives ...
ands a PCRM supporter, you will know your donation is being spent wisely:
So please send in your donation of $20 or more today. We are so close to winning. Yet
there are still animals locked in laboratories whose every waking moment is spent in fear,
waiting for the next round of unconscionable torture.
‘We are too late for Queenie, But we are not too late for thousands of animals like her
Please let me hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
