OSMOSIS SCENARIOS WORKSHEET

The cells in the diagram above were place into pure water.

1) What will happen to the mass of each cell?

2) Which cell will gain water the quickest?

The cells in the diagram above were placed into a 2% sugar solution.

1) Which cell will water leave?

2) Which cell will gain water?
3) Which cell will stay the same mass (same amount of water will
enter and leave the cell)?

The cells in the diagram above are plant cells, why do they not burst
when they are placed into pure water?
Water
Osmosis
Pressure
Cell membrane
Cell wall
Cytoplasm
Vacuole

1) Describe what happened to the plant cell above when it was

placed in distilled water.
Use as many of the key words above in your description.

2) Describe what happened to the plant cell above when it was

placed in strong sugar solution.
Use as many of the key words above in your description.
Dialysis tubing (partially permeable membrane) was filled with either
20% sucrose solution (tube 1) or distilled water (tube 2) and placed
into a beaker of 5% sucrose solution. Sucrose is too large to pass
through the membrane of the tubing.

1) Is the solution in tube 1 more or less concentrated that the

solution in the beaker?

2) Will water enter or leave tube 1? Why?

3) Will water enter or leave tube 2? Why?

Potato chips (plant cells) were placed into beakers containing
different concentrations of sucrose for 1 hour. They were weighed
before and after being put into the beakers.

1) Predict what will happen to the mass of the potato in beaker 1.

2) Explain your answer to question 1.

3) Predict what will happen to the mass of the potato in beaker 5.

4) Explain your answer to question 1.

5) In beaker 3 the mass of the potato stayed the same, can you
suggest why?
