COLONY, HONEY PLANT AND MARKET CONDITIONS DURING JUNE 2023

APPALACHIAN DISTRICT (MD, PA, VA, WV): Bloom has been prolific, and colonies continue to produce brood and honey. Colony health is very
good. Swarming has calmed down a bit. Precipitation was around normal with an increase in showers near the end of the month. Pollen and nectar
sources were various clovers, dandelion, elderberry, honeysuckle, sourwood, melons, alfalfa and wildflowers. Several beekeepers harvested honey
starting at the end of the month with most saying the volume was very good.
National Honey Report Vol. XLIII - Number 7 Page 2 July 26, 2023

ALABAMA: Northern and Southern Alabama both saw much warmer than normal temperatures and low rainfall until the last week of the month.
Nectar flow was lower than normal, with most beekeepers reporting low harvests. Management activities were normal for the time of year;
harvesting, supering down, occasional splitting and varroa treatment. Small hive beetle appears to be worse than normal across the state.
Northern floral blooming: Crape myrtle, sumac, chaste tree, mimosa.
Southern floral blooming: Crape myrtle, privet re-blooming, kudzu, elderberry, assorted herbaceous forbs.

ARIZONA: No report issued

ARKANSAS: During the month of June temperatures were well above normal across most of the state. Precipitation was well Above normal across most
of the same area. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor website, Arkansas had abnormally dry conditions across the northern part of the state. Normal
soil moisture conditions existed across most of the rest of the state.

CALIFORNIA: Some California beekeepers reported a wide range of forage for their bees and good honey flow this June.
Others told a different story. “Many species of plants are screwed up,” a beekeeper said. “I'm seeing and getting reports of unusual bloom times and
amounts of nectar.” Though plenty of water was available, temperatures remained unseasonably cool. Some orange blossom bloom failed for beekeepers
and others saw little luck with sage. Both usually have great honey flows. “Here in the foothills, it's been OK, but not great,” he said. “But blackberry is
coming on strong. We're crossing our fingers for yellow star thistle afterward.”
Another beekeeper said June’s honey flow from sage end, with wildflowers and wild alfalfa producing honey. “Once the weather warmed up,
buckwheat and toyon began to produce good amounts of honey,” he said. “We are beginning to move some bees into cucumber pollination and look
forward to the fall honey plants to continue honey production.”
Prices for sage honey were around $3.25 per pound.

FLORIDA: Temperature and precipitation were about normal for the month with many afternoon thunderstorms across the state. Bee health was
considered to be about average. Many bees were producing clover honey in North Dakota or wildflower honey in New York. Gallberry honey production
in north Florida was probably about normal. Some palmetto or wildflower honey was produced in south Florida beginning early in the month with
mangrove becoming available later in the month. Cabbage palm was also a source of honey production in central and south Florida. Many beekeepers
were splitting and building hives particularly in central and north Florida. Some were also treating for mites in preparation for the Brazilian Pepper flow
which is expected to begin in early to mid-September. Many in south Florida were expected to split hives and/or treat for mites after the mangrove flow
ended. Stored supplies of honey were fairly light with good demand at the end of the month. Due to the lack of volume, prices were probably slightly
higher than last year.

GEORGIA: The Tupelo crop looks promising, and buyers are purchasing what they can as prices have gone up. Sourwood is coming up next and some
beekeepers are worried about getting enough flow in some areas. A few places are not available due to construction of roads and they won’t let any of the
bee hives in while they are working. It has been a rough year with the temperatures running from hot to cold and wet to dry earlier in the season causing
blooms to be sporadic and not setting very well. Sales have been affected and buyers are purchasing from other areas. Kudzu and cotton are the main
sources for July through September and some beekeepers think it may be a good year if the crops continue to flourish and weather does not make it too
wet causing problems. Costs have doubled for 5-gallon buckets as they used to buy them for $5 and now they are costing $10 to purchase them.
Beekeepers are now asking for deposits to make sure buyers return the buckets to them. Price for wholesale is quoted at $2.20 per pound. Beekeepers are
not quoting prices out of a catalogue since they change too quickly now with the main flow/harvest just starting.

IDAHO, COLORADO, UTAH: During the month of June temperatures and precipitation were normal in Idaho. Utah had temperatures that were normal
and precipitation that was a little below normal. Colorado had a little lower temperature than normal across the whole state, Precipitation for Colorado
was far above normal for eastern Colorado and western Colorado was normal.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor website, in June Idaho had no drought to an area of moderate drought. Utah is currently under no drought to
moderate drought conditions. Colorado had normal soil moisture.
Producers are saying Idaho hives are doing well and the honey flow is coming on good, and they are healthy. Utah is saying they are having
problems with the heat and the honey flow is slow. They don’t know what it will look like this year.
Prices for the month of June were between $2.80 and $3.20 per pound with a mostly price of $2.85-$3.00 for Idaho, Colorado prices are too few
producers reporting to determine a market. Prices for locally sourced honey in Utah are $2.80-$3.25 per pound with mostly $3.25.

ILLINOIS: Temperatures for the month of June were slightly higher than normal with very little rainfall. Beekeepers report that most of their bees are in
good condition. Beekeepers also report the bees are feeding on wildflowers, such as Sweet Clover, soybeans and White Dutch Clover. So far,
beekeepers very happy and expect that this will be a very good year with a great deal of production. Demand for honey is good at the retail level and slow
at wholesale level. Prices are generally unchanged.

INDIANA: Temperatures for the month of June were slightly cooler than average. It was very dry with very little rain. Beekeepers report that their bees
continue to feed on wildflowers, such as Dutch Clover. Beekeepers report their bees are in good condition. Beekeepers report a good amount of honey
flow. Demand for honey is good at the retail level and fairly good at the wholesale level. Prices are generally unchanged.

IOWA, KANSAS, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA: No report issued.

KENTUCKY: In general, Kentucky beekeepers seem to have produced decent amounts of honey (approximately 50 pounds of honey per hive in KY)
from clovers and other late-spring varietals. Although the state has had some severe storms, the rain seems to have been spaced enough to not affect the
nectar/pollen availability too adversely. There was one case of European foulbrood confirmed during inspection, but the rest of the hives in the apiary
did not show symptoms. The beekeeper elected to reach out to a local veterinarian who provided a Veterinary Feed Directive to a bee supply store. The
beekeeper has provided the prescribed antibiotic to the sick hive.
National Honey Report Vol. XLIII - Number 7 Page 3 July 26, 2023

In another event, a beekeeper had a hive poisoned by a neighbor (the neighbor admitted it), but since the neighbor used an over-the-counter product
and admitted to it, there was nothing that KDA Division of Environmental Services could do. A police report was filed by the beekeeper.
Both state beekeeping associations are working very hard to fulfill respective priorities. Kentucky State Beekeepers Association has raised prices for
its Honey Booth at the KY State Fair in August (its only fundraiser) due to the higher prices for supplies such as jars, labels, and value-added supplies for
lip balms, soaps, and lotions. The Kentucky Queen Bee Breeders Association will be offering a queen bee insemination workshop as well as hosting its
annual meeting in July (two different weekends). Most meetings of smaller local beekeeping associations have resumed across the state with solid
attendance.

LOUISIANA: During the month of June temperatures were slightly below normal across most of the state. Precipitation was well below normal.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor website, the northern third of Louisiana had normal soil moisture with central and southern two thirds showing
abnormally dry conditions. A band of moderate drought conditions continues to hang on along the coast in the southeast corner.

MICHIGAN: No report issued.

MINNESOTA: During the month of June temperatures were normal across the North end of the state. The South end of the state was higher than normal.
Precipitation for June was higher for the whole state. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor website, the whole state had abnormally dry to moderate
dry soil moisture.
Prices per pound in Minnesota were $2.80-$3.75 with mostly price of $2.80-$3.00 for locally sourced honey for the month.

MISSISSIPPI: Most beekeepers will have a fourth to one third of honey as compared to last year. No honey available in many areas and prices are quoted
at $2.70 lb for light amber if they have availability. Some beekeepers are actually oversold due to slow harvesting and a very light honey crop this year so
far.

MONTANA: No report issued.

NEW ENGLAND: No report issued.

NEW YORK: NO report issued.

NORTH CAROLINA: No report issued.

NORTH & SOUTH DAKOTA: Warmer weather contributed to plant development and most crops were ahead on both last year and the average.
Pastures, hay, and alfalfa were fair to good despite the warm weather. Hives were beginning to make their way back to take advantage over various floral
sources. Additional rain would help to ease drier conditions as temperatures rise.

OHIO: No report issued.

OKLAHOMA: During the month of June temperatures were about normal across most of the state. Precipitation was well below normal. According to
the U.S. Drought Monitor website, Oklahoma had scattered areas normal soil moisture to areas of abnormally dry, to areas of moderate drought
conditions. There is an area of severe to extreme conditions along the Kansas border.

OREGON: No report issued.

SOUTH CAROLINA: No report issued.

TENNESSEE: In Tennessee, beekeepers are reporting lower than average honey production for the year so far. The nectar and pollen sources for June
were very limited. Too much rain at the wrong times and not enough rain at the right time has been an issue this year with the honey flow. There was
some clover producing nectar but beekeepers reported no bees on the clover for most of the state. Sourwood and sumac sources did not bloom in June
like they normally do. Both sumac and sourwood were starting to show buds the last week of June but have not opened up yet.

TEXAS: During the month of June temperatures were well above normal across the state. Precipitation was well below normal for most of the state.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor website, soil moisture conditions to revert back to the dry conditions across much of the state. Scattered areas had
normal soil moisture spotted with abnormally dry conditions. These were then spotted with areas of moderate drought. An area of exceptional drought
continues West the San Antonio area.
Too few prices exist to establish a current market price for wholesale white honey.

WASHINGTON: June started out warm and dry as in May. First cuttings of hay and alfalfa were completed as was the asparagus harvest. Spring seeded
crops along with the various fruit crops continued to develop, although some were slowed by dry conditions. A windstorm mid-month brought some
smoke in from Canada. The temperatures dropped latter in the month few windy days. As the month went on temperatures dropped to seasonally low
temps toward the end of the month. Bees worked various vegetable and field crops as well as some wildflower sources.

WISCONSIN: Temperatures for the month of June were cooler than average with very little rainfall. Beekeepers report a normal, healthy population of
bees. Beekeepers report wild foliage for their bees includes Clover, Alfalfa, Milkweed and Black Mustard and other wildflowers. Honey production
continues. Demand for honey is good at the retail level and fairly good at the wholesale level. Prices are generally unchanged.
