Why is project management essential?
Project management (PM) is essential since, in order to survive, organizations need to innovate through the implementation
of new undertakings (Camilleri, 2011). These endeavors include for instance, new product development, major building
construction, and the implementation of new information systems.

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

Is project management essential in your company / business? WHY?
What is a project?

Routine, Repetitive Work Projects

Taking class notes Writing a term paper
Responding to a supply-chain request VS Developing a supply-chain information system
Practicing scales on the piano Writing a new piano piece
Routine manufacture of an Apple iPod Designing an iPod that is approximately 2 X 4 inches,
interfaces with PC, and stores 10,000 songs

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

What are the characteristics of a project?
Projects…
Have a target
Have a beginning and an end
Involve multiple stakeholders (in most cases)
Unique (in most cases)

Facts
• In numerous projects, PM practitioners, project managers, or Project Management Offices performed below expectation
(Ramazani and Jergeas, 2015). Reichelt and Lyneis (1999) reveal that in a sample of 10 large and complex projects, the
schedule overrun was 55 per cent on average, and the budget overrun was 86 per cent on average.

• The Chaos Report of 2009 reveals that (Johnson, 2009):

only 32 per cent of IT projects were delivered successfully,
44 per cent were delivered late, over budget, or with less than the required functions and features,
and 24 per cent were either cancelled before completion or completed but never used

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

Why do you think projects are underperformed?
What is project “success”?

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

Provide examples of successful and failed projects in your company?
Why are they successful? Why do they fail?
What is project “success”?

What is project “success”?

“The project manager’s traditional role has been to balance

scope, schedule, and budget to deliver the specified output. But
often, achievement of these traditional objectives does not mean
that the project is perceived to be successful?”

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

Agree or disagree? Why?
What is project “success”?

Learning from history, the Romans tended to view public project

“success” based on their long-term impact
It is seen based on how it affects the
sustainability of the firm (royal family)
What is project “success”?

“Clearly, a successful project is one

that delivers its outputs and
significantly contributes to the
fulfillment of agreed objectives.
Moreover, it should have only minor
negative effects, its objectives
should be consistent with needs and
priorities in society, and it should be
viable in the sense that the intended
long-term benefits resulting from
the project are produced.” (Samset
& Volden, 2015)
What is project “success”?

There is a paradox where despite the

importance of strategic decisions (e.g.
choosing the right project); the public
tends to be more concerned when
projects fail tactically rather than
strategically. For instance, the public
tends to put more attention on inefficient
projects which are over-budget or late
(type 2) rather than projects which are not
meeting society needs (type 3).

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

Any examples of Type 1, 2, 3, 4 in your company?

Where do your company put in more effort: “doing the right” projects or “doing projects right”?

DISCUSSION (5-10 minutes):

Can you see the paradox?
Project Competencies: Traditional vs Modern View

Few projects fail because of a mistake in the critical path method

analysis or an error in the cost charts (Belzer, 2001). More often,
projects fail because of problems in communication, motivation,
and stakeholder management.
