Math for Engineers

Jonrey Rañada, PECE

Definition
• A linear equation in a single variable (unknown) involves powers of
the variable no higher than the first. A linear equation is also referred
to as a simple equation.

• Example:
Equations involving algebraic fractions
• Where simple equations involve algebraic fractions, the first step is to
eliminate the denominators by multiplying throughout by the LCM
(Lowest Common Multiple) of the denominators.
Least Common Multiple / Denominator
• Least Common Denominator (LCD) – refers to the product of several
prime numbers occurring in the denominators, each taken with its
greatest multiplicity.

Ex: LCD of 8, 9, 12 and 15 Ex: LCM of 15 and 18
