The sum of a Finite Arithmetic Sequence

*Finite Arithmetic Series (Sn)
- the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence
Ex. If A1 + A2 + A3 ,…, An is an arithmetic sequence with a common difference d, and

Sn = (A1 + A2) or Sn = [2A1 + (n - 1) d ]

*Where was Sn = [2A1 + (n - 1) d ] derived from?

Sn = (A1 + A2)

= [ (A1 + A1 + (n - 1) d) ] *Note: An = A1 + (n - 1) d

Sn = [ 2A1 + (n - 1) d ]

1) Find the sum of the first 10 terms of the sequence 5, 9, 13, 17,…
4 4 4
*Given: A1 = 5, d = 4, n = 10
Sn = [2A1 + (n - 1) d ] = 5 (10 + 36) *Note: n is = 10 since we
= 5 (46) are finding the sum of the
= [ 2 (5) + (10 - 1) 4 ] first 10 terms of the
Sn = 230 sequence
= 5 [10 + (9) 4]

2) Find the sum of the first 31 terms in the sequence 28, 17, 6, -5,…
-11 -11 -11
*Given: A1 = 28, d = -11, n = 31
Sn = [ 2A1 + (n - 1) d ] = (-274)

S31= [ 2 (28) + (31 - 1) -11 =

( )

= [ 56 + (30) -11] = 31 (-137)

S31 = -4,247
= [56 + (-330)]

= (56 - 330)
