■ A computer is an electronic device which

works very fast.

A computer is an electronic machine that works as per the
instructions given by you.
-It accepts data ( input),
-manipulates the data according to specified rules
(process),
-produces results (output), and
- save the result for future use (Storage).

WORKING OF COMPUTER

Computer does four jobs.

1. A computer inputs data,
2. Processes it,
3. Displays the output as information, and
4. Stores it.

Information Processing Cycle

The series of input, process, output and storage

activities is known as Information Processing
Cycle (IPO).

INPUT
■ Any data or instruction entered into the computer is known as Input
and the device that does that function is known as input device.
■ An input device helps you to communicate with a computer.
■ It is generally used to enter the data and give commands to the
computer.
■ E.g.: Keyboard, mouse , scanner

PROCESS
■ Central Processing Unit(CPU) is the main chip in the
computer which is used to process data.
■ Processing means treating the data according to the
instructions and changing it in the form of useful
information.

OUTPUT
■ The data that has been processed into a useful form is called Output
and the device that is used to display the generated result is known as
output devices.
■ These devices can display information on screen, create printed copies,
or generate sounds.
■ Eg: monitor, printer, speakers.

STORE
■ After processing, the computer stores the data on a storage
device.
■ The computer uses information stored on the storage device
to perform tasks.
■ E.g. hard disk,CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, pen drive.
