IMPACT DESTRUCTIVE

TESING METHOD
-is a high strain destructive testing method that determines
the amount of energy absorbed by a material during its
fracture
-it is performed in order to determine the toughness of the
material
NB-Toughness is the ability of material to withstand shock
loading without fracture
-it also relates to the ability of a material to bend without
fracturing or breaking
 Impact test can be performed from 196 degrees celcius
up to room temperature according to the Belgian
institute
 In order to characterize the toughness properties If the
welded material and heat affected zone, a notch is
machined at a specific predetermined distance from line.
 For example (fusion line +1) in order to characterize the
toughness properties of material and heat affected zone
(HAZ)

Applications of impact test

- Material characterization and verifications
- determinations of ductile and brittle behavious

1
-welding procedure qualifications

Test standards
-Iso 148-1 (2009) for metallic materials
-Iso 9016 for welding joins
TYPES OF IMPACT TEST
-there are two main types of impact test that is Izod and
charpy
-both involve striking a standard specimen with a
controlled weight pendulum travelling machine at a set
speed as shown over the leaf

2
Izod impact testing
- this is when a specimen is tested vertically
-it uses only a V notch of 75mm×10mm×10mm specimen
as the Iso 148-1(2006) states
-This is tested at a notch of 45 degrees vertically and the
hammer strikes on the direction of the notch as show

3
below

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES FOR IZOD

ADVANTAGES

 It is simple
 It is fast

4
 Inexpensive method that requires a minimum
preparation.

DISADVANTAGES

 The force used to vary the sample can vary and

can add significant stress to the specimen
 Clamping the specimen on vice might cause some
damages to the material.

5
Charpy impact test

As shown above on charpy impact test a specimen is

placed horizontally
-a hammer can strike opposite site on which a notch is
machined

6
-It indicates the amount of energy needed to break
standard test specimen. It is a standardized high strain
rate test which determines the amount of energy absorbed
by a material during fracture.
- The construction industry uses these to measure the
impact resistance of building materials such as
concrete and steel
- Manufacturers use the test to ensure the quality and
reliability of materials used in the production
- It uses both V and U notches to determine the
toughness of welded joins.
- The specimen are of 55mm×10mm×10mm as show
below

ADVANTAGES OF CHARPY TEST

 The charpy test results are more complex for a

design.
 A well defined transition temperature curve is
difficult to determine at large scatter inherent.
DISADVANTAGES

 It is fairly easy to perform

 Helps to accurately assess the quality of a product
7
 Very helpful when evaluating new products to be
used in new environment.
 It is relatively cost effective test method to check
for composition.

CONCLUSION

The use of notch in the test specimen was crucial in increasing the
sensitivity and reproducibility of the measurement.

On the other hand , impact test is subjected material to a sudden ,

intense blow, in which the strain rate extremely rapid, hence the
material mat behave in a much more brittle manner than is observed in
tensile stress.

Whereas, energy required to break the samples per original cross

section area is impact strength.
