1. (a) Verify that fxy = fyx if

i. iii.
f(x, y) = x 7 ln y + sin xy. f(x, y) = ex cos y.
ii.
f(x, y) = 3x 2 y − 2xy + 5y 2 .

(b) Verify that the following satisfy the Laplace‘s equation fxx + fyy = 0.

i. ii. y
f(x, y) = ln(x + y ). f(x, y) = tan−1 .

2. (a) Let z = f(x, y) = x 2 + 3xy − y 2 .

i. Find the differential dz.
ii. If x changes from 2 to 2.05 and y changes from 3 to 2.96, compare the values of dz and ∆z.
(b) The base radius and height of a right circular cone are measured as 10 cm and 25 cm, respectively,
with a possible error in measurement of as much as 0.1 cm in each. Use total differentials to estimate
the maximum error in the calculated volume of the cone.

radius is 5 cm and the height is 12 cm if the radius is increasing at 5 mm/s and the height is decreasing
at 15 mm/s.
