METEOROLOGY FINAL

ACTIVITY 3

1. NASA - NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA is a U.S.
government agency that is responsible for science and technology related to air and space. The
Space Age started in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik.
2. NOAA - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) works to understand and
predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts. Their work supports severe weather
preparedness, and international shipping.
3. JMA - Just Messing Around" is the most common definition for J
MA on Snapchat, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. JMA. Definition: Just
Messing Around.
4. PAG-ASA - Is a Tagalog language word meaning "hope". It may refer to: PAGASA, Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
5. ECMWF - The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an
independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states
6. SAWS - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is your partner in facing these challenges.
SAWS is the authoritative voice for weather and climate warnings in South Africa. As a member
of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it complies with international standards in
weather and climate forecasting.
7. CMA - The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) is the national weather service of the
People's Republic of China. The institution is located in Beijing. China Meteorological
Administration
8. CNWS - Effects of Carbon Nanowalls (CNWs) Substrates on Soft Ionization of Low-Molecular-
Weight Organic Compounds in Surface-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry
(SALDI-MS)
9. INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT - The India Meteorological Department is an agency of
the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India. It is the principal agency responsible
for meteorological observations, weather forecasting and seismology
10. AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY - The Bureau of Meteorology is an executive agency of
the Australian Government responsible for providing weather services to Australia and
surrounding areas. It was established in 1906 under the Meteorology Act, and brought together
the state meteorological services that existed before then.
11. DOPPLER - By their design, Doppler radar systems can provide information regarding the
movement of targets as well as their position. When the WSR-88D transmits pulses of radio
waves, the system keeps track of the phase (shape, position, and form) of those pulses.
12. RADIOSONDES - The radiosonde is a small instrument package that is suspended below balloon
filled with either hydrogen or helium. As the radiosonde is carried aloft, it measures pressure,
temperature, and relative humidity.

13. ODAS - An ocean data acquisition system (ODAS) is a set of instruments deployed at sea to
collect as much meteorological and oceanographic data as possible.

14. WEATHER FAX - Facsimile (fax) is a means of providing weather information to ships at sea. The
information is presented as a chart (map), showing barometric high pressures, low pressures,
pressure gradients, wind speed and direction, and temperature.

15. NAVTEX RECIEVER - A NAVTEX receiver onboard prints out navigational and meteorological
warnings and forecasts as well as urgent Marine Safety Information to ships. It forms a vital
element of the Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS).

16. IRIDIUM - International Maritime Organization (IMO) certified, Iridium GMDSS is the most
advanced mariner safety service in the market that encompasses a set of protocols, equipment,
and communications systems designed to ensure that if a ship is in distress, aid can be
dispatched from anywhere in the world.

17. INMARSAT C - Inmarsat is the leading provider of GMDSS-approved satellite communication

services. Our Inmarsat C service has been keeping seafarers safe at sea every day since the
inception of GMDSS in 1999 through the receipt and transmission of vital ship-to-shore and
shore-to-ship distress alerts.

18. SINGLE SIDE BAND - SSB (Single Sideband) is an obscure but very important way to communicate
via radio. It is used primarily for two-way voice communication by ham radio operators, aircraft
and air traffic control (ATC), ships at sea, military and spy networks. Occasionally some
shortwave broadcast stations use this format.

19. WINDY APP - Windy.com is an extraordinary tool for weather forecast visualization. It's fast,
intuitive, detailed and most accurate weather app trusted by professional pilots, paragliders,
skydivers, kiters, surfers, boaters, fishermen, storm chasers and weather geeks, and even by
governments, army staffs and rescue teams.

20. PASSAGE WEATHER -PassageWeather.com specialises in Sailing Weather Forecasts... We

provide 7-day Wind and Wave Forecasts to help sailors with their passage planning and
weather.
LABORATORY 3

PRESENT WEATHER

Next to the visibility is the present weather symbol. There 95 symbols which represent the weather that
is either presently occurring or has ended within the previous hour.
CLOUD / SKY COVERAGE

Pilots flying visually (VFR, see Learning Goal 1g) must stay outside of clouds. Even those flying in
instruments (IFR) are concerned if there is a low overcast (i.e. a low ceiling) over their destination
airport. For this reason, cloud coverage is important to pilots.
PRESSURE TENDENCY

 The pressure change in the past 3 hours preceding the observation. Plotted to the
nearest tenth of a millibar.
