INTRODUCTION

1
Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature Vol.6 No.2 (2020)

Human and behavior are an unity, the relationship between humans and behavior that acts
as a psychology. The psychology discovers the human’s behavior that is influenced by their
experience. Psychology tells about mental, behavior and mind. Psychology includes the
study of conscious and unconscious phenomena, as well as feeling and thought. It is an
academic discipline of immense scope. According to Muhibbin Shah (2001) says
“Psychology addresses deep human behavior relationship with the environment. Concluded
that psychology is science that studies open behavior and closed to humans both as
individuals and groups, in relation with the environment”. Particularly, it relates to people
daily life such as behavior, sense, and thoughts which contains in individual psychology.

Individual psychology is a social being, an individual’s behavior is mostly influenced and

motivated by social environment. This is considers further all actions are guided by a
person’s basic attitudes in life. Namely a feeling of oneness with all humanity , it works
with an individual as an equal to uncover his values and assumptions. According
Adler (1985), individual psychology is a science that attempts to understand the
experiences and behavior of each person as an organized entity. Therefore, humans
are social beings with a basic behavior. Adler also believes that humans are born with the
feelings of inferiority. As soon as the individual realizes his existence, he feels inferior
about his role in the environment. Individuals see that many other creatures have the ability
to achieve something they cannot do. This inferiority complex arises when an individual
wants to rival the strengths and abilities of others.

As an individual, all of people have an intense desire to be loved and nurtured. People need
to be loved and others have shown, could be considered one of the most basic and
fundamental needs which nature an official. According by Brian Ogolsky (2017), doing
something to convince ourselves that this is a good relationship and therefore it's good for
the relationship. Human beings are involve in social life, and most of people yearn for close
relationships with other people. Relationships require a lot of work and a lot of
communication, but it can still be hard to understand what the other person is thinking and
act.

Devotion is everlasting without exceptions and should have progresses as an

increasingly intense inner love and internally relationship. By experiences in society, to
devote something is not easy, there must up and down situation and all comes from
mind and human thoughts and behavior. The nature of human, everything can’t go
through with human expect. It can distrupt caused by conflict at the society and some
factor as individuals with other relation. The society develops their social life with goals
and interests. The social relationship have different goals and interests toward the
emergence of domination of some group or classes. The domination following in several
aspects of life, even a strong domination follow with the economic aspect. The
domination makes the low class people take action to struggle for better life. It means
domination by classes as a barrier to reach people needs. It is also reflected to human
behavior caused by environment which is distrupt the psychology someone who make

weak and feeling inacapability to achieve goal in life and that will be psychological
barrier.
One of the concepts in the field of psychological barrier that become the center of beliefs
that a person their self regarding the self worth, unhealthy, incapability to reach goals. It is
include denial, a perceived lack of social support, a lack of knowledge or a dysfunctional
capability towards the situation. Overcoming the barriers involves a realistic, informed
perspective of the situation and persistent attempts to break down the barrier by thoughts
and actions.

The problem of psychology also tells in literary work. Literary work has the same
significance in meaning as understanding human’s existence with this mental and inner-self
problem. Literature is a work that expresses and communicates thoughts, feelings, and
attitudes toward life and the world (George 1965:16). Since literature is the exposition of
human mental life, it can be said that literary works has relationship to psychology. The
creativity of an author will determine the quality of his work. In addition, writers of literary
works are also often said as a creative activity. Literary works and psychology have the
same object of the research that is human being.

Literary psychology has four meanings. First, literary psychology is the psychological
understanding of the author as a person or type. Second, the study of the creative process of
the paper. Third, analysis of psychological laws applied in literary works. And fourth,
literary psychology is also interpreted as a study of the effects of literature on psychiatric
conditions rather than readers.” (Wellek and Warren, 1989:90).

Literary of psychology as a psychological activity from both the author and the readers.
Literary works, for those in the form of prose such as short stories, drama and novel must
tell the story of the characters in living their lives. In writing literary work, authors must
present a character with unique character and behavior to add to the attraction of the story. .

Based on the explanation above, this researcher examines the psychological barrier and
devotion of relationshop in the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks using Individual
psychology theory because the problem analyzed by the researcher is discuss about
behavior and psychology affect to the main character. In individual psychology theory
reflected in The Notebook novel by Nicholas Sparks, it is one of the social phenomenon that
is a reflection in human life. Therefore, this study chose the theory of individual
psychology as a theoretical reviews in case to solve the problems found in the novel.

2.1 Theoretical Review

The review describes, Literary of psychology content appears in a wide range of literary
forms, as such poetry to short stories, plays and novels. However, the most explicit
reference to the human mind is to be found in psychological novels which deal with
individuals inner experiences, thoughts, feelings, emotions and introspections. Literature
tells how human beings behave in dealing with their problems and environment, and
psychology tells about behavior and closed to humans both as individuals and groups, in
relation with the environment.

Particularly, it relates to people daily life such as behavior, sense, and thoughts. Therefore
literature of psychology deals with the study of observable patterns of human’s behavior.
Literary works and psychology have the same object of the research that is human being.
Every human life is always full of problems. Sometimes it becomes complex and creates
the personality of human life.
The feeling influences the human being style of life, the manner in which to overcomes the
presence of inferiority. Human beings will conduct their compensation in different ways
depending on the goal that wants to be reached out. In order to reach goals human is always
concerned with their social concern. It relates to the concept that human is a social creature,
not individual one. As a social one, people interact with others and then form a certain
relationship with such as: friendship, brotherhood and lover. Consequently, that the
relationship will control them not to hurt the others feeling in which they care the other’s
life too.

2.1.1. Individual Psychology

Individual psychology developed by Alfred Adler that studies human as a unity. Adler
believes that human is a social being (Adler, 1929). As a social being, an individual’s
behavior is mostly influenced and motivated by social environment. He considers further
all actions are guided by a person’s basic attitudes in life. The processes of the author’s
creation are the objects of the psychologist investigate curiosity. Individual psychology
insists on the fundamental unity of personality. In other word, individual has physical and
personality as a unity in conducting his action who is guided by attitudes toward social life.

Adler said that superiority is not social isolation, leadership, or a high position in society.
Superiority is an effort towards perfection. It is a "strong upward push". In other words, the

6
Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature Vol.6 No.2 (2020)

effort for superiority is the final goal in human life which gives consistency and unity to
personality.
"They struggle to crave victory, security, increase, whether in the right or wrong
direction. Impetus from minus to plus never ends. Whatever rationale all of our
philosophers and psychologists dream of - self preservation, the principle of
enjoyment, equalization - all are merely blurred images, attempts to describe a
strong upward push" (Adler, 1930, p.398), with this knowledge, the researcher
analyse, this struggle is innate, that is part of life, even life itself. From birth to
death the struggle towards superiority brings the person from one stage of
development to the next stages of development that is higher and has commitment.
The drives are not separate, because each drive gets power from the struggle toward
perfection. The drive towards superiority manifests with thousands of different
ways (lifestyles), and that each person has their own concrete way of achieving or
trying to achieve perfection.

Individuals can develop exaggerated inferiority feeling and strive towards an imagined goal
of inferiority and avoiding the real test. The community feeling and the final goals of co-
operation are better than the final goal which is egocentric. This would reveal power
concern, self-interest, withdrawal and avoidance. According to Adler, the approach to life
with individual traits, the style if life and the unique way in which each person tries to
recognize their fictional final goals and meets or avoids the three main task of life; intimate
relationship, community and work. In early childhood the life style is formed and in a
unique and develop the same styles. Healthy persons deal with life tasks more flexible. This
can find ways of solving problems and in case one is blocked, they can choose one another
and the individual who is disturbed who individually insist on one way. There are elements
of Adler’s Individual psychology.

Due to lack of self interest or putting something in positive form people will be excessively
self-interested. According to him, being besieged by inferiority is by feeling competent,
doing well, affording to think of others. All individuals suffer from inferiority like Adler
suffered from organ inferiority. Many people react to organic inferiorities through
compensation. People make their deficiencies in a different way. The inferiority organ can
be strengthened and become stringer than others. Individuals can psychologically
compensate their problems by developing particular skills or even specific personality
styles. Many people are not in a position to handle their problems and they live lives of
silent depression. People optimism and society which is increases seriously undervalues
their numbers. Many people have psychological inferiorities.

1. Inferiority Feeling

7
Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature Vol.6 No.2 (2020)

This feeling forms incompleteness, weakness, and fear in individuals. Inferiority feeling
may be constructive or destructive to individuals. They may be develop a will to grow
up and become capable. The desire to become more powerful and capable which lead
their ways to achieve their goals. They make many ways to get their goals depending on
their experience of life. Adler’s ( 1985) state that inferiority feeling is “one of the
important factors in forming and developing an individual’s personality towards the
behavior in life (p.147).
The inferiority feeling is only normal when people face extreme life situations. However,
in the case of individuals suffering from the inferiority complex, this feeling manifests
itself continuously and constantly along human life. The individual slides by major life
issues and narrows human space excessively, through isolation. This behavior is caused by
the lack of self-esteem and belief in human own forces. The inferiority complex causes
shyness, pessimism, anxiety or lack of communication. Useless to say, these behaviors
betray the prolonged lack of social contact.

a. Psychology Barrier
Psychology barrier is incapabilities and lack of social support is potential to destroy
obtaining goal in human life. This is caused by environment, personality, thought,
actions also dysfunction of physical health. Psychology barrier are mind associated
problems that keep from reaching a solution, obtaining a goal, establishing positive
relationships or taking a step toward finding a new chance. Therefore, understanding
what these issues are will help people on the journey to overcome intangible fears and
frustrations. In this research, researcher choose the factor from psychological barrier
as such social status, lack of support, incapability health.

2. Striving for Superiority

Superiority feeling can be defined as feeling capable of solve problems in striving the
success. Superiority is the point where individual attain their goals. There is become a
movement in individual’s life once the superiority feeling appears. This movement
indicates that they are striving for their superiority. Adler (1964, p:79-80) states, “…life
is the attainment of a goal or form, and it is the striving for superiority which set the
attainment of form into motion”. While the striving for superiority is innate, the specific
manifestations of this striving are determined by the content of our self-ideal.
Superiority feeling arises when inferiority feeling appears. People who feel inferior
once make an effort to cover it up with superior feeling. To apply the concept of
superiority striving to the understanding of human being with the goal of success as
drawing the individual forward toward mastery and the overcoming of obstacles. He
observed that, for socially-interested individuals, the goal of superiority is on the useful
side of life and contributes to the developing human community.
By contrast, the discouraged person, operating on the useless side of life under the
burden of increased feelings of inferiority, makes the error of supposing that his or her
task is to attain a position of superiority over others. This movement invites the
antagonism of others, creates a disturbance in the life of the community, and contributes

8
Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature Vol.6 No.2 (2020)

to his or her further defeat. The discouraged person may express the superiority striving
in postures of self-elevation, depreciation of others, and self improvement, countering
the immense feelings of inferiority with a pattern of compensatory pretenses to
superiority which may be termed a superiority complex.
Individual is guided by final goal, people strive toward a final goal either personal
superiority or the goal of success for all humankind. Important because it unifies
personality and renders all behavior comprehensible. Each person has the power to
create personalized goal. Goal is neither genetically nor environmentally determined It
is a product of creative power.

a. Devotion
Devotion is a strong feeling for love, loyalty, or feeling enthusiasm of love or cause.
To devote something should be consistently, trustworthy, and never give up with any
conditions, means that if there is anything in life that deserves the effort of concerning
to life with or spending time with, then it should be continue to give extra effort. The
object to devote something will be a part of people’s life, their sense of pleasant
depends on whether people are flourishing and full of meaning. Devotion also related
with patiently and sacrify, it is describe as a tripartite state of passion, intimacy, and
dedication, similar to Stemberg’s triangle of love. Stemberg’s (1997) said “several love
styles are possible, from non-love to consummate love, which expect to exist in person-
object relationships in a similar way. In this research, researcher chooses the factor for
encourage devotion as such consistently, trustworthy, patiently, and sacrify

2.2. Theoretical Framework

The analysis process in this research can be explained through the theretical framework.
The theoretical framework of this research is drawn as below :

Figure 2.1. Theoretical Framework

9
Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature Vol.6 No.2 (2020)

Based on the theoretical framework above, the researcher analyse the novel using
individual psychology theory by alfred adler. The theory divides the elements of
psychology into six elements, however the researcher only focuses on the inferiority and
superiority elements. The researcher uses the inferiority to describes the psychological
barrier faced by the main character in the form of social status barrier. Meanwhile the
superority elements is used by the researcher to describes the devotion of the main
character towards the relationship by analyzing the struggle to get to the superior level of
psychology element.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Type of the Research
In this section, the researcher explains about the type of research that used, which is
Descriptive. Descriptive means that within this research, the researcher would briefly
describe systematically, factual, and accurate information on the facts that have been
studied. The existing data in the form of literary work that is novel The Notebook by
Nicholas Sparks. Which explain in the form of words and not in numeric form.
Although this research employed qualitative method, qualitative research method is a
method that gives attention to the nature of data that are in a relationship context of
existence. The researcher also used quantitative method to support the interpretation of
data. Therefore, by providing statistical work in the form of percentage, the researcher
could easily describe the phenomenon that she wanted to investigate by giving fixed
percentages to make a clear explanation.

3.2. Source of Data

There are two kinds of data used by the researcher, the first one is primary data and the
second one is secondary data. The primary data of this research is The Notebook Novel by
Nicholas Sparks. This novel was published on 1996 produced by Nicholas Sparks. The
researcher focuses on the narration and dialogue in the novel. The second one is secondary
data; the secondary data of this research that used is some references e-books that support
this research, such as book about literature, Individual Psychology by Alfred Adler,
research methodology, and some of studies as previous study.

3.3. Data Collection Procedure

The first procedure is the researcher decides the type of the research. The researcher uses the
descriptive qualitative as the type of the research. After the researcher chooses the type of the
research, the researcher chooses the object which is the The Notebook novel.

In the data collection procedure is to read the novel, looking for information and are available
on the information needed about social psychological which domination to the main character

pyschological barrier are faces by the main character in the novel. After analyze the barrier
things, the researcher gains information about what barrier is from some refrences from e-
book. Determines the theory to be used to find some factor psychological barrier in this
research.
Individual Psychology theory leads to component of psychology barrier and devotion from
main character. The researcher classifies what a problem and the researcher remark the
novel narration related to the problem. The next step is find the suitable written dialogue
with the novel narration to explain to the readers since the readers cannot find the meaning
from the narration only.

3.5. Trustworthiness of Data Analysis

Trustworthiness of data analysis in qualitative research is necessary, it used to check and
decide the validity by analyzing the data with the theory correctly. Triangulation is the one
of the way to check the consistency of the research. The researcher uses the triangulation to
check the validity of the data.
