ADHD Awareness Month

ADHD Embrace is here to support schools

October is ADHD Awareness month and we are
spreading the word to local schools about how we
can help them support children with the condition.

What is ADHD? ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can impact daily life at
school, at home and work and in social interactions. It is a lifelong
condition that is often associated with hyperactivity, inattention and
impulsivity. Children with ADHD are often considered to display
‘disruptive behaviour’ particularly in school. It's important to note that
while the symptoms of ADHD don't necessarily change between boys
and girls, how they present can be quite different. Recent studies
show that girls more commonly tend to have ADHD with an
inattentive presentation so may be quiet in the classroom but could
'zone out' or seem restless and distracted.
Many individuals with ADHD do not reach their potential due to the
challenges they face. During their school life and careers, they are
more likely to suffer from social isolation, mental health issues, teen
pregnancies, prison sentences and economic hardship.
With better education about the condition, children and young people
can get the right support to help change the direction of their lives.

Who is ADHD We – ADHD Embrace - are the local charity that helps families and
professionals who live and work with children with ADHD in the
Embrace? Boroughs of Kingston & Richmond. Helping children with ADHD in the
classroom is also critical and that is why we work with schools and the
whole teaching community. We believe that early intervention and the
correct support can change the direction of childrens’ lives for the
better – preventing a slide towards not thriving in life or not reaching
their potential.

How we can In October 2021 we launched a Schools' Outreach Programme. We

saw increasing numbers of young people with ADHD being excluded
help schools from school (short and longer term) and increased levels of mental
health issues. Additionally, our survey feedback asked for more
training for schools to better equip them to manage pupils with ADHD.
