This document is a chapter from the book "Plant Factory Basics, Applications and Advances" that discusses optimizing the light spectrum for photosynthesis and plant morphology in LED-based crop cultivation. It reviews how different wavelengths of light impact both photosynthesis, which provides energy for plant growth, and developmental processes. The chapter explores applying this knowledge of plant adaptive responses to spectral light to maximize crop growth and quality in indoor agriculture.

LED-based crop cultivation, Editor(s): Toyoki Kozai, Genhua Niu, Joseph Masabni, Plant Factory Basics, Applications and Advances, Academic Press, 2022, Pages 309-327, ISBN 9780323851527, https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-323-85152-7.00018-5. (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780323851527000185) Abstract: Photons are simultaneously an energy source for plant growth and a signal for development. Through photosynthesis, plants convert photon energy into chemical energy powering life on the Earth. To maximize survival, plants need to find ways to efficiently capture photons. As sessile organisms, plants must acclimate to seasonal, daily, and hourly fluctuations in their growing environment, and use their local light environment as a signal to initiate developmental changes. Here we review spectral effects on both photosynthesis and plant development—especially on morphology and secondary metabolite synthesis. We discuss the application of these adaptive responses to optimize crop growth and quality in indoor agriculture.
