Abstract: Photons are simultaneously an energy source for plant growth and a signal
for development. Through photosynthesis, plants convert photon energy into chemical
energy powering life on the Earth. To maximize survival, plants need to find ways
to efficiently capture photons. As sessile organisms, plants must acclimate to
seasonal, daily, and hourly fluctuations in their growing environment, and use
their local light environment as a signal to initiate developmental changes. Here
we review spectral effects on both photosynthesis and plant development—especially
on morphology and secondary metabolite synthesis. We discuss the application of
these adaptive responses to optimize crop growth and quality in indoor agriculture.
