GEC 7: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

Week 8 Activity:

1. Describe two (2) social impacts of the development of information age.

Several new ideas and technologies emerged throughout the Information Age.
Since the development of several communication tools, including social media, email,
and texting, the world has changed significantly. A greater number of books have
been translated into several languages, making it easier for people to learn new
languages.
2. How can you effectively handle fake news, disinformation or lies on social media?
As a citizen, with the evolving of the technology and social media I think we can
handle fake news - by first, know what we are reading online, know what we are
posting online. Always consider fact checking and looking for legit sources in the
mainstream. Always be accountable on what we post online and make sure it is not
fake news.
3. How do you know web sources are reliable? Give 5 examples of reliable
sources.
In general, a trustworthy or dependable source is one that specialists in your topic
domain would agree is appropriate for your needs. This might vary, so choose the
source assessment approach that best meets your needs. Remember that credibility is
situational It is essential to critically assess sources since doing so makes you a better
knowledgeable writer. Consider untrustworthy sources to be polluters to your
reputation; if you incorporate untrustworthy sources in your work, your work may
lose credibility as a result.
4. Differentiate the statement: “Selection is a viewpoint” vs “The media sells what
the culture buys.”
"Selection is a worldview," we claim. We commonly choose several sources of
information, but if you want a more true image of reality, you should visit as many
websites as possible. While it is true that "the culture buys what the media sells,"
information is impacted by cultural priorities and what is popular; as a consequence,
the media will focus on breaking news or delivering information on that specific
problem.
