The right limb of simple U – tube manometer containing mercury is open to the
atmosphere while the left limb is connected to a pipe in which a fluid of sp.gr.
1 0.9 is flowing. The centre of the pipe is 12 cm below the level of mercury in the CO2 AP
right limb. Find the pressure of fluid in the pipe if the difference of mercury
level in the two limbs is 20 cm.
Find out the differential reading ‘h’ of an inverted u tube manometer containing
oil of specific gravity 0.7 as the manometric fluid when connected across pipes
A and B, conveying liquids of specific gravities 1.2 and 1.0 immiscible with the
manometric fluid. Pipes A and B are at the same level and the pressures at A and
B are assumed to be same.

The Reynolds number for fluid in a pipe of 10 inch diameter is 2000. What will
3 be the Reynolds number in a 6 inch diameter pipe forming an extension of 10 CO2 AP
inch pipe? Take the flow as incompressible.
4 In Fig 9-10 H = 25 m, L = 40 m, Ɵ = 300, d = 8 mm, γ =10kN/m3, and µ = 0.08
Pa.s. Find pressure drop per unit length of pipe and the discharge in liters per
minute.

5 The diameter of a pipe gradually reduces from 1 m to 0.7 m as shown in fig. the
pressure intensity at the centre – line of 1 m section 7.848 kN/m2 and rate of
flow of water through the pipe is 600 litres/s. find the intensity of pressure at the
centre – line of 0.7 m section. Also determine the force exerted by flowing water
on transition of the pipe.
