SCENE #1 - FOREST

(JOEY, ELI, RILEY, and GABBY are walking in the forest. Everything is dark and
they can barely see where they are going. Suddenly, they run into someone.)

GABBY
Ah! Who’s there?
RILEY
Guys, it’s me. Riley!
JOEY
Oh, good. I thought you were the monster everyone’s been telling me about.

RILEY
Wait, what monster?
ELI
Oh, there’s this legend about a monster that hides underground and when it’s dark, in the
middle of the night, the monster will come out and… and…

RILEY
And what?
ELI
Well, I guess the monster would kill you. But no one has ever made it out alive to really
know what happens.
RILEY
Why don’t we find out?
GABBY
I don’t think that’s a good idea.
JOEY
Yeah. Maybe we should just go back home.

ELI
Come on! Are you guys scared?
GABBY
Hey! I never said-
JOEY
Yes we are. We are completely terrified.

RILEY
But, guys! It’ll be so fun. Besides, we need to get in the Halloween spirit!

GABBY
I mean, I guess it can’t be that bad.
JOEY
Seriously, Gabby?
GABBY
When was the last time you got a good scare?

ELI
Also, we could be the first ones to find the monster and make it out alive. And if we do,
we’ll be legendary!
JOEY
Fine.
RILEY
Awesome!

(All four kids begin to walk in the forest when unexpectedly, they stumble upon a
random door.)
ELI
Wow, what’s this?
GABBY
You don’t think it’s-
JOEY
The monster’s entrance to his secret layer?

RILEY
If it is, then it isn’t secret anymore. I’m going in.

JOEY AND GABBY

No, Riley!

(Without hesitation, RILEY walks through the door with ELI following after her.
GABBY and JOEY have no choice but to follow them.)

SCENE #2 - THE MONSTER’S LAYER

(The four kids walk into the layer. The layer is covered with bones, skulls, old
wood, etc.)
RILEY
Look at this. There are bones and skulls everywhere.

GABBY
Are those human skulls?
JOEY
I think so. And if we don’t get out of here now, our heads might be…

GABBY
Chopped off.
JOEY
Yeah, no. I’m out.
GABBY
Right there with you.
ELI
Fine. I guess you guys are just scaredy cats.

GABBY
Excuse me?
ELI
You heard me.
RILEY
You know, they can leave if they want to. They don’t have to stay with us.

JOEY
I’ll stay, but if there is anything dangerous, I’m out.

ELI
Fine.
(The lanterns lighting up the room suddenly go out. Black out.)

JOEY
Ah!
GABBY
Ah! Riley, Eli? Joey? I can’t see you guys.
ELI
I’m over here.
GABBY
Where is “over here?”
RILEY
It doesn’t matter. We’re all safe, right?
GABBY
Yeah.

ELI
Mh-mh.
RILEY
I’m safe, too. Wait, where is Joey?
GABBY
Joey?
ELI
Joey? Where are you?
GABBY
Oh, no. We lost Joey! He’s dead.
ELI
Hey, now. We don’t know that for sure. He probably ran out before the lights turned off.

GABBY
Sure.
(The lights flicker on.)
RILEY
How did those lights turn on?
ELI
I don’t know. Fire can’t just do that on its own.

GABBY
That doesn’t matter! Joey’s body isn’t here.

RILEY
Yeah, so he just left.
GABBY
But there are marks from his shoes.
ELI
She’s right. His last footprints look like they are right here and then… Well, it looks like he
just magically disappeared.
RILEY
That’s not possible, is it?
GABBY
I hope not.
ELI
Look! There are threads from a… potato sack? And look! They continue out the door.

RILEY
That probably leads to Joey.

GABBY
What if it doesn’t? What if it leads us to our death?

ELI
Then we’ll just try our best not to die.
GABBY
Uh…
RILEY
Come on, we have to find Joey before…
ELI
Before what?
RILEY
Before it’s too late.

(The three kids look at each other in fear and walk away as they begin their search
for JOEY.)

SCENE #3 - FOREST

(ELI, RILEY, and GABBY are all looking for JOEY. They search behind trees, under
bushes, but they can’t find anything.)

GABBY
Joey! Where are you?
ELI
Joey?
RILEY
Guys, we’re never going to find Joey.
ELI
Trust me, we will find him. We just have to keep looking.

GABBY
But we’ve been searching for hours.
ELI
Well, technically, we don’t know that. All of our phones died so we have no clue what time
it is…
GABBY
Okay, well we’ve been searching for what’s felt like hours and we haven’t found anything.

RILEY
We can’t just give up on Joey. He’s our friend.

GABBY
Well I’m starting to think that we should give up on him.

RILEY
Come on, guys. We have to keep looking for-

(RILEY looks out to the distance and sees something.)

What’s that?
GABBY
What’s what?
RILEY
There’s something in the distance. I can’t tell what it is.

ELI
I see it. Look, it's glowing.
RILEY
We have to go check it out. It might lead us to Joey.

GABBY
Are we sure we want to do that?
ELI
Your friend is lost and we have no clue where the heck he is. If you want to, you can leave
and prove that you don’t care about your friend or you can be a great friend and maybe
even save his life. So what’s it going to be?

GABBY
Well, I… I don’t know.

(GABBY stands silently. RILEY and ELI decide to leave GABBY. GABBY begins to
walk the other way. However, she is spooked by the sound of wrestling trees.)

GABBY (CON’T)
Guys! Wait up!

(GABBY runs towards the rest of her friends.)

SCENE #4 - MYSTERIOUS LIGHT

(The three kids approach the mysterious glowing object. As they get closer, they
realize it's a lantern hanging from a tree branch.)

RILEY
Look at this lantern. It’s so old and creepy.

ELI
Yeah, it looks like it’s been here for centuries.

GABBY
Do you think it has anything to do with Joey?

RILEY
I don’t know, but we have to keep following the path. It might lead us somewhere.

GABBY
Ooh, I am never going trick-or-treating with you guys ever again.

(They continue walking, following the faint trail of potato sack threads.)

SCENE #5 - ABANDONED HOUSE

(The path leads them to an old, decrepit house. The windows are shattered, and the
door creaks ominously.)

GABBY
Oh no. This place gives me the creeps.

ELI
It’s just an old house, Gabby. Nothing to be scared of.

RILEY
Let’s go in. Joey might be in there.

(They cautiously enter the house, their footsteps echoing through the empty
rooms.)
ELI
Joey! Are you in here?
GABBY
Joey, it’s us!
RILEY
Guys, look!

(They find a piece of paper on the floor. It reads, "Unscramble the letters if you
want to find me :) - Joey")
RILEY
What?
GABBY
Oh, I don’t like this.
RILEY
So we just unscramble these letters?
ELI
Joey, you little sneak!

(RILEY, ELI, and GABBY all start to unscramble the letters, chattering among
themselves. They eventually unscramble the letters, revealing a sentence saying “LOOK
INSIDE”)
ELI
Look inside. Look inside what?
GABBY
(Pointing to a rustic door.)

Maybe that.
RILEY
Okay…

(The kids slowly walk towards the door and open it. Suddenly, a loud “RAWR!!”
sound comes from the door. The kids all run away as fast as they can.)

ELI
(Still running.)

What was that?

GABBY
(Practically crying.)

I don’t know!

SCENE #6 - OUTSIDE

(The kids stop to catch their breath when JOEY pops in out of nowhere.)

JOEY
Hey guys!
RILEY, GABBY, ELI
Ahh!
JOEY
How’d you like my prank?
ELI
A prank!
RILEY
Of course! You got us good.
GABBY
I can’t believe you pulled this off.
ELI
Well, we should have known. Joey always did have a mischievous streak.

JOEY
You know, you should have seen the looks on your faces.

GABBY
That was really scary.
ELI
You really had us going there.
RILEY
We thought you were in real danger!
JOEY
I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist. I wanted to give you all a Halloween scare you’d never forget.

GABBY
Well, you definitely succeeded.

ELI
Next time, just warn us before you go disappearing in a spooky forest.

RILEY
Yeah, seriously. We were so worried!
JOEY
But that would take all of the fun out of it.

ELI
He’s got a point.
GABBY
But it was very scary.
JOEY
But admit it, this was pretty epic.

(They all share a laugh and head back home, relieved and full of adrenaline from
the prank.)
