“PE stands for… Powerful Education”

Establishing Classroom Atmosphere

Physical education is an important building block for future physical fitness, and this is why I
believe PE is the most important subject in school. I believe that students only continue to be
physically active if they find something they enjoy doing. In my classroom I want students to
give their best effort while also having good sportsmanship. I also want students to be respectful
of the equipment they are provided. The goal of my class is for the students to find a physical
activity that they can use for the rest of their life to be physically active and fit.

Protocols
Establishing Rules
My rules will be posted somewhere within the gym, most likely on a poster on a wall somewhere
in the gym. With every new class, I will introduce these rules to the students by going over them
and reestablish them if I feel we are straying away from them.

The rules

Rule Meaning
Wear proper clothing. Tennis shoes, athletic clothing and no necklaces.
Be a good classmate and have good Be respectful of other classmates, cheer them on
sportsmanship. and encourage them.
Use gym equipment properly. Respect the equipment that has been given to us,
use it right and BE SURE TO PUT IT AWAY!!
Give your best effort! Give your best effort daily no matter the game.
Have Fun!!!
Consequences
Strike one: students will be reminded of the rule/’s and be asked to refrain from their behavior.

Strike two: students will sit out for at least 10 minutes, if not the rest of the class depending on
the severity and their behavior after being asked to take a break.

Strike three: students will be asked to go to the principal to have a conversation about their
behaviors.

Routines
Entering and Leaving
Upon entering the gym, the students will walk outside of the court and when a majority of the
class has arrived I will ask them to come to the middle. This is where I will take attendance along
with letting the students know what we will be doing for the warm-up that day. After the warm-
up is complete, we will then discuss what the activity is for the day. Before the class is over I
will ask all students to return the equipment being used that day and then have the students line
up and this is where I will begin my closure part of the lesson plan.

Starting and Stopping

I will carry a whistle with me at all times and the students will know when they hear a whistle to
freeze and listen to what I might have to say. There will also be music playing in the gym that
will help me with starting and stopping the class.

Equipment
The equipment for the day will be organized and placed in the correct spot with the first class of
that grade for the day, or by myself depending on how much there is to do and if it takes one or
more persons. The students will then help clean up at the end of class as long as there is enough
time.

Partners and Groups

If we need partners and groups for the day I will simply have the boys line up on one line and the
girls on the other and place them on teams with the knowledge I have on the class. Occasionally
we will draw sticks for teams, but I think the most efficient and fair way is for me to do it.
Groups and teams will be divided with pinnies that the PE department will provide.
Water Breaks
There will be at least one water break in the middle of the class, this will be a one-minute water
break for the whole classroom. I will also allow students to get water breaks on their own
throughout class but they are only to be dismissed one at a time.

Bathroom Use
Students are encouraged to use the bathroom before class, in between classes, or wait till after
class but I will allow them at a maximum of one bathroom break during class. The students will
only be able to have one girl and one guy dismissed at a time during class, unless there is an
emergency.

Gym Attire
Students will be encouraged to wear athletic clothing to class. However, the students will be
required to wear gym appropriate shoes, no sandals, boots or Hey Dude shoes.

Getting Off to a Good Start

Describe and Demonstrate
Throughout the course of the class I will provide a verbal and physical demonstration for how
classroom procedures and gameplay should be. I will also provide visuals through video footage
of gameplay for the different games we will be participating in.

Practice
The students will be asked to recite and act out the classroom rules and procedures to assure they
understand them. Along the lines of gameplay, the students will obviously practice their skills
and techniques every day in class.

Providing Feedback
The students will be provided verbal feedback by myself throughout the class and they can also
view their grades for feedback. The students giving their best effort and perform well in the
activity will receive positive feedback while the students who are misbehaving will be given
verbal reminders of the rules and the students who may not be excelling at the class will be given
constructive criticism and encouragement to help improve their gameplay.

Setting Performance Standards

Students will understand that their grade is based on their effort and sportsmanship, not skill
level. When a student shows good effort and sportsmanship they will receive positive
reinforcement verbally and their grade will also reflect as such.

Maintaining Consistency
The class will be reminded of the rules and procedures daily, to the point where they come into
the class and know exactly what to do and the rules to follow.
