Time Lesson Notes


6:00 – Computer Literacy
6:30  The first five minutes will introduce the class.
Go over the tasks for tonight and any
business that needs to be addressed.
 The students have the choice between:
o NoRedInk
o SkillsCanada – tonight’s focus
o Typing.com
o ReadTheory
o Quill.org
6:30 – Listening
7:00  TED Talk! HERE
 Show the video to the class.
 Afterwards, have the class discuss the ideas
of the video.
 Post leading questions on the board:
o What is the message of this video,
and do you agree with the speaker?
7:00 – Speaking
7:30  Class Debate
 Split the class in half; try to mix the strong
members of the class with the newer
members of class.
 The students will debate this topic: Do you
believe that Brooks needs more trees?
 One side will say Yes, the other side will say
no.
 Give the groups 5 minutes to come up with
their arguments.
 Flip a coin (or number pick) to find who
argues first.
 Remind the groups that they need to
respond to the arguments made by the other
team, even if they agree with them.
7:30 – Reading  Copy exercise 40 “Lend an
8:00  Timed Reading Ear”
 Remind the newer student of the format of  Currently you have 17
the reading. students
 The students have up to 5 minutes to read
the passage, and the rest of the time to
complete the questions on the back side of
the page.
 Several students will finish this activity in the
first 5 minutes. These students are
encouraged to work on their digital literacy
tasks to fill the time.
8:00 – Writing
8:30  Students will refer to the TED Talk earlier.
 In this writing, they will write out a time they
felt scared of change but persevered into
success.
 Depending on how yesterday’s writing went,
you may need to review basic writing
structure. If so, spill over into Bonus
Assessment time.
8:30 – Bonus Assessment/Goals Work
8:50  Students will have the opportunity to work
toward their Bonus Assessments here.
 They should have chosen their bonus
assessment in a previous class.
 This time may also be used as “spill-over”
time for the Writing section of class.

8:50 – Final thoughts, class questions, hand-out homework Homework (if any):
9:00 assignment
 If there was a topic that was discussed today
that you feel needs a little more focus or
time, take this time to go over that concept
again.
 Ask the class if they have any questions
related to today’s class; it may take some
probing or leading questions to get them
started.
 If there is homework, hand it out now.
 This is also overflow time for if sections of
the class go long.
