Chickens and Dinosaurs

Laboratory Activity #1: General Biology 2

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this laboratory activity, the students should be able to do the following:
 Examine the morphology of modern chickens.
 Compare and contrast the features of chickens and dinosaurs.
 Explain possible relationships between chickens and dinosaurs.

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Computer with an internet connection

PROCEDURE
1. Examine the structures of the chicken skeleton. (Access https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=TOJavnAj5rc).
2. After examining the structure of the chicken, proceed with the examination of the dinosaur fossils.
3. After familiarizing yourselves with the morphology of both chickens and dinosaurs, construct an
illustration showing the gradual changes in the bone structures of these organisms. You may do this in
the space provided below.
4. Pick one structure that you want to focus on and try to compare the morphology and function between
chicken and dinosaurs. You may do this in the space provided below.
5. Answer the guide questions afterwards.

POST-LABORATORY QUESTIONS
1. What are the similarities in the bone structure of chicken and dinosaurs?
2. What can be the distinct difference between the bones of two organisms?
3. By comparing the two organisms, are you convinced chicken can serve as the living fossil for the
dinosaurs? Explain your answer.
