C HOICE member Andrew bought what was described as a dog washer
from the Karcher website. The product description said it was battery-
operated with a long battery life. When he received it, he found it had a battery
life of 15 minutes, and it took 180 minutes to recharge. Andrew wrote to Karcher
to say he believed it was not fit for purpose, as it takes longer than 15 minutes
to wash a dog. When he didn’t hear back, he called Karcher and repeated his
request to be allowed to return the product and get his money back.
The customer service operator was adamant that what Andrew was
describing was a change of mind, which they would not refund on. She also
told Andrew that he could have looked at the operating manual, available
on their website, before buying the product to learn about the battery life.
Andrew didn’t think he should have to go through the operating manual
to find where it says that maximum battery life is 15 minutes, when in the
product description it says “long battery life”.
We told Andrew that under the consumer guarantees of the Australian
Consumer Law, goods bought come with automatic guarantees that they
are ‘fit for purpose’ and match the descriptions made on packaging and
labels and in advertising. If a good fails to meet this guarantee, a consumer
is entitled to receive a remedy of either a repair, replacement or refund.
We suggested Andrew contact Karcher again, stating that he believes the
dog washer doesn’t meet the consumer guarantees of being ‘fit for purpose’
and doesn’t ‘match the descriptions made in advertising’, and that he would
like a refund under the consumer guarantees of
the Australian Consumer Law. We suggested it

TABLE NOTES Recommended We recommend dishwashers with a CHOICE Expert Rating of 80% or more, that also achieve at least 75% for washing performance and 80% for drying.
We don’t recommend any dishwasher with any weighted scores under 60%. Price Recommended retail, as of December 2020. Running costs An estimate of how much the dishwasher will
cost over 10 years for water and electricity if you wash a full load every day using a normal or auto-sensing cycle, based on 30c per kWh for electricity and $2 per 1000L water. We don’t include
standby energy costs in calculations. CHOICE Expert Rating Made up of washing performance (65%), drying performance (25%) and energy efficiency (10%). Washing performance Based
on the number of food specks left on dishes or the area of larger stains. Drying performance Based on the number of drops and/or streaks left on the dishes half an hour after the end of the
wash. Energy efficiency Based on the amount of energy used per place setting by the dishwasher on the tested program. The less energy used, the better the score. Noise is measured 1m
away and 1m up from the dishwasher, placed within cabinetry. A difference of 3dB is noticeable to the human ear. Brand reliability scores are taken from our 2018 Brand Reliability Survey.
Scores refer to brands, not particular models. na means there weren’t enough respondents with that brand to be scored. Water connection H or C You can connect the dishwasher to hot or
cold water. Connecting to hot water is likely to shorten the cycle time, but you may lose program versatility; Cold Can only connect to a cold tap; C rec Can be connected to hot or cold water, but
cold is recommended for best performance. Type FW Freestanding with a worktop (can generally be inbuilt as well); BI Built-in – might not have top or side panels, and must be enclosed and
anchored; DD DishDrawer; FI Fully integrated – built-in with the whole front matching your kitchen and the controls inside the door; BT Benchtop – a self-contained unit that sits on your bench
and does not need to be built into cabinetry. Colour SS Indicates any metallic or metallic-look finish, not all models are actually stainless steel; B Black; W White.
