Ahok (Basuki Tjahaja Purnama) Biography

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (born 29 June 1966) is an Indonesian businessman, politician and
former governor of Jakarta. He is also known by his Hakka Chinese nickname Ahok
(Chinese: 阿學).

Ahok was a legislator in the Indonesian People's Representative Council (DPR) and Regent
of East Belitung.[2] He was elected to the House of Representatives for the 2009–2014 term
but resigned in 2012 to run for the deputy governorship of Jakarta, to which he was elected.
In November 2014, he became governor of Jakarta, as his predecessor Joko Widodo had
become president.[3] During the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, Ahok was struck by
allegations of blasphemy in October 2016 and criticism of his policies on forced evictions.
He later lost the election to former Education Minister Anies Baswedan and was then
imprisoned for blasphemy.[4][5][6]

Ahok was the second governor of Jakarta with Chinese ancestry and also the city's second
Christian governor, following Henk Ngantung, who was governor from 1964–65.[7][8]

Family and personal life

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Chinese: 鐘萬學; Tjung Ban Hok; pinyin: Zhōng Wànxué; Hakka
Pha̍ k-fa-sṳ: Chûng Van-ho̍ k) was born on 29 June 1966 and grew up in Manggar, East
Belitung. He is the first son of Buniarti Ningsih and the late Indra Tjahaja Purnama.[9] He has
three siblings: Basuri Tjahaja Purnama, Fifi Lety, and Harry Basuki.

Ahok married Veronica Tan on 6 September 1997, and the couple has three children: Nicolas
Sean, Natania, and Daud Albeneer.[10][11] They divorced in 2018, with Ahok gaining custody
of the two younger children.[12] In 2019, Ahok married Puput Nastiti Devi, a police officer
who previously served as the aide of his ex-wife.

Appreciation

Basuki received an award as an Anti Corruption Person from the state administrators from the
Three Pillars Partnership Movement, consisting of the Indonesian Transparency Society,
KADIN and the State Ministry for Empowerment of State Apparatus, on February 1, 2007.
He was considered successful in suppressing the spirit of corruption of local government
officials, among others by its act of transferring allowances for government officials for the
benefit of the people, namely for the provision of free health and education services for the
people of East Belitung. He was also chosen to be one of the 10 figures who changed
Indonesia, which was chosen by Tempo

Basuki again received an anti-corruption award from the Bung Hatta Anti Corruption Award,
which he received on October 16, 2013. He received this award because of his efforts to open
the DKI Jakarta budget line for review. [41]

Controversy

In his career as the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Basuki has triggered a variety of controversies
that are mostly caused by his statement. Some of these include the Sumber Waras Hospital
land controversy, the control of Kalijodo, accusations of labeling citizens as "communists",
the use of harsh words, and statements related to "being lied to using Surah Al-Maidah 51",
or also the case of blasphemy, which triggered blasphemy. strong response in the form of a
series of Islamic Defending Action.

The case of blasphemy began with a video clip of Ahok's speech in the Thousand Islands in
September 2016 which was spread online. [43] Ahok visited the Thousand Islands to
socialize the grouper cultivation program. Ahok cited Al-Qur'an's verse Al-Maidah verse 51.
From 40 minutes of Ahok's speech, this 13-second video piece was then debated.

"So don't trust people. You can't, in your own hearts, you can't choose me, yes - being lied to
using Al Maidah letter 51, all that, you know. That's the right of ladies and gentlemen. Yes.
So, if you ladies and gentlemen, the feeling of not being able to choose, for fear of going to
hell, is being fooled, yes, it's okay. Because this is your personal calling. This program just
works. Yes, so you don't need to feel uncomfortable in your conscience, you can't choose
Ahok. Don't like ama (same) Ahok. But the program, if I accept, I'm not comfortable with

Detention

On May 9, 2017, Basuki was sentenced to two years in prison by a panel of judges in the
North Jakarta District Court headed by the head of the panel of judges, Dwiarso Budi
Santiarto for a case of blasphemy.

Post-imprisonment

He was released on 24 January 2019 due to remissions granted at Indonesian Independence


Day and Christmas.[64][65] Soon afterwards, he joined the PDI-P.[66] He has requested to be
called as 'BTP', rather than 'Ahok' by which he is more known.[13]

In 2019, Ahok stated that he "could no longer become a government official".[67] During
Jokowi's second term of presidency, Ahok was appointed as the president commissioner of
the state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina.
