Experiment: Reaction of Metals in Oxygen, Water, and Acid

A. Objectives:

1. To observe and understand the reactivity of different metals (copper, zinc, magnesium, and iron) in various environments:
oxygen, water, and acid.
2. To relate the observations to the reactivity series of metals.

B. Materials:

 Copper (Cu) wire

 Zinc (Zn) granules
 Magnesium (Mg) ribbon
 Iron (Fe) nail
 Bunsen burner or a source of open flame
 Test tubes
 Beaker of water
 Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
 Safety goggles
 Gloves

C. Procedure:

1. Reaction of Metals in Oxygen:

 Light a Bunsen burner or open flame.
 Hold the copper wire, zinc granules, magnesium ribbon, and iron nail one at a time over the flame.
 Observe and record any changes or reactions that occur.
 Be cautious with the magnesium ribbon, as it may produce a bright flame.

2. Reaction of Metals in Water:

 Place a small piece of each metal (copper, zinc, magnesium, and iron) in separate test tubes.
 Add water to each test tube.
 Observe and record any changes or reactions.
 Pay attention to the rate of reaction and any gas bubbles produced.

3. Reaction of Metals in Acid:

 Place a small piece of each metal (copper, zinc, magnesium, and iron) in separate test tubes.
 Add a few drops of hydrochloric acid (HCl) to each test tube.
 Observe and record any changes or reactions.
 Note the effervescence (bubbling) and the rate of reaction.
