Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Ben Avdic

Date: 4/10/2023
Teacher: Ms. Lacroix
Capstone strand I have chosen is Product
Proposed title for my project: 3D Modelling and texturing pipeline and work

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

What techniques and tools can be used to create visually stunning and fully textured 3D
Models, and how can these skills be showcased in a portfolio?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I chose this inquiry question because I had a friend who had been creating his own fully
textured models for a couple years prior ask me if I wanted to learn how to do what he does.
When I first started, it was hard to become familiar with the programs and how they work, but
after a couple lessons from him, I began to enjoy creating my own items to my own personal
liking. Im choosing to investigate this topic because the idea of turning a cube into a fully
detailed model that you would see in a render or video game has always fascinated me, then
following with textures and how a model is useless without a texture. This area of inquiry
connects to my passions because in the future, when I eventaully have my portfolio built, I can
do freelance work for companies or people alike.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

I have some knowledge of 3D modelling and texturing from the lessons given to me by my
friend online. I’ve also done work for some of my friends by importing models from games into
Blender, allowing me to retexture them to their liking for their own uses.

0
Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

My intended career area at this point in time is 3D modeling and texturing. This field involves
creating three-dimensional digital models of objects, characters, environments, and more, and
then applying textures to these models to make them look realistic and visually appealing.
Professionals in this field often work in industries such as video games, film and animation,
architectural visualization, product design, and virtual reality.

Passion and Interest: Pursuing a career in 3D modeling and texturing aligns with my passion
and interest in digital art and computer graphics. This connection motivates me to dedicate
time and effort to develop my skills and knowledge in this field.

Academic Goals: To excel in 3D modeling and texturing, individuals often need to acquire
specific technical skills and knowledge. Therefore, my academic goals may include enrolling
in relevant courses or programs, attending workshops, and earning certifications in software
tools like Autodesk Maya, Blender, or Substance Painter.

Career Goals: My career goals may involve seeking internships or entry-level positions in
companies or studios specializing in 3D modeling and texturing. These early career
opportunities can provide practical experience and mentorship to help me progress in the
field.

Networking: Building connections with professionals already established in the 3D modeling

and texturing industry is crucial. Networking can lead to job opportunities, collaborations, and
exposure to the latest trends and techniques in the field. Attending industry conferences,
joining online forums, and participating in art communities are ways to establish these
connections.

Portfolio Development: To succeed in 3D modeling and texturing, having a strong portfolio of

work is essential. My academic and career goals may include continually building and
improving my portfolio to showcase my skills and creativity to potential employers or clients.

Life Balance: Balancing career goals with personal life is important. It's essential to manage
time effectively, maintain a healthy work-life balance, and ensure that my chosen career area
aligns with my overall life goals and values.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility:

Strengths: Understanding the impact of decisions and actions can be applied to 3D modeling
and texturing by recognizing that the choices made during the creative process directly
influence the outcome of the project. It encourages taking responsibility for the quality of work

1
and making choices that positively affect the final result.

Weakness: Learning to take care of oneself can relate to finding a balance between
dedicating time to your 3D modeling projects and ensuring personal well-being. It's important
to avoid burnout and prioritize self-care while pursuing a career in a creative field.

Strengths: Valuing diversity, advocating for ethical behavior, and working for the benefit of
others can be linked to creating inclusive and culturally sensitive 3D models and textures.
Being aware of the broader social and environmental impact of your work is crucial for making
responsible choices, such as using eco-friendly textures or representing diverse characters in
your projects.

Weakness: Striking a balance between considering different perspectives and making timely
decisions aligns with the need to be open to creative input from others in collaborative 3D
projects. While it's important to value diverse viewpoints, it's also essential to avoid indecision
and delays in the creative process.

Critical Thinking:

Strengths: Analyzing and critiquing your work and considering the purpose and audience of
your projects are integral to producing high-quality 3D models and textures. Self-reflection can
help you improve your skills, while audience consideration ensures your work effectively

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

While embarking on the 3D modeling and texturing Capstone Project, I anticipate several
project limitations and potential obstacles that could impact progress. Identifying and
addressing these challenges proactively is essential to ensure a successful project outcome:

1. Technical Challenges:

Software Learning Curve: Learning and mastering 3D modeling and texturing software tools,
especially if they are new or complex, might take time and effort.
Hardware Limitations: Inadequate computer hardware could lead to slow rendering times and
limitations in handling complex 3D scenes.
2. Resource Constraints:

Access to References: Limited access to high-quality reference materials, such as detailed

images or 3D scans, may hinder the accuracy of models and textures.
Software and Asset Costs: Acquiring licenses for premium software tools and 3D assets could
strain the project budget.
3. Time Management:

Balancing Commitments: Managing the Capstone Project alongside academic coursework

and other responsibilities may require careful time management to avoid burnout.
Meeting Deadlines: Ensuring timely completion of project milestones and the overall portfolio
within the project timeline can be challenging.
4. Creative Blocks:

Artistic Stagnation: Encountering creative blocks or struggling to find inspiration might slow
down the creation of high-quality models and textures.
5. Skill Development:

Skill Progression: The need to develop and refine 3D modeling and texturing skills may impact
early project phases and require additional time.
6. Feedback Availability:

Availability of Feedback: Relying on external feedback sources, such as mentors or online

communities, may lead to delays if timely responses are not guaranteed.
7. Portfolio Quality:

Quality Expectations: Striving for high-quality portfolio pieces may demand revisions and
refinements, potentially extending the project timeline.
8. Scope Control:

10
Scope Creep: Expanding the scope beyond the original project plan could lead to project
delays and increased complexity.
Mitigation Strategies:

To address these limitations and obstacles effectively, I plan to implement the following
mitigation strategies:

Skill Building: Dedicate time to skill development at the project's outset to mitigate potential
delays due to learning curves.

Resource Management: Carefully budget for software licenses and assets and secure a
reliable source of reference materials.

Project Planning: Develop a detailed project plan with clear milestones and deadlines to
manage time effectively.

Regular Feedback: Maintain regular communication with mentors and online communities to
ensure timely feedback and guidance.

Flexibility: Remain open to adapting the project scope if necessary while ensuring alignment
with project goals.

Creative Strategies: Implement creative techniques such as brainstorming and concept art to
address creative blocks and maintain momentum.

Time Allocation: Allocate dedicated time slots for project work and balance academic
commitments and personal time to prevent burnout.
