Problem 1.

A cylindrical steel bar is attached at the top and is subjected to three axial forces, as shown in
Figure 1. Its cross section has an area of 0.50 in2. Determine the deflection of the free end.

Problem 2.

A link in an automated packaging machine is a hollow tube made from 6061-T6 aluminum. Its
dimensions are as follows: outside diameter = 1.250 in., inside diameter = 1.126 in., and length =
36.0 in. Compute the tensile force required to produce an elongation of the bar of 0.050 in. Would
the stress produced by the force just found be safe if the load is applied repeatedly?

Problem 3.

Figure 2 shows a bar carrying several static loads. If the bar is made from ASTM A36 structural
steel, is it safe?

Problem 4.

In an aircraft structure, a rod is designed to be 1.25 m long and have a square cross section of 8.0
mm on a side. The load is 5000 N. Determine the amount of elongation that would occur if it is
made of
(a) titanium Ti–6Al–4V and
(b) SAE 501 OQT 1000 stainless steel.

Problem 5.

A tension member in a truss is subjected to a static load of 2500 lb. Its dimensions are as follows:
length = 8.75 ft, outside diameter = 0.750 in., and inside diameter = 0.563 in. First, specify a
suitable aluminum alloy that would be safe. Then, compute the elongation of the member.

Problem 6.

Figure 3 shows the cross section of a short compression member that is to carry a static load of
640 kN. Specify a suitable material for the member.

Problem 7.

The column shown in Figure 4 is constructed from high-strength concrete and eight A992 steel
reinforcing rods. If the column is subjected to an axial force of 200 kip, determine the average
normal stress in the concrete and in each rod. Each rod has a diameter of 1 in.

Problem 8.

The column shown in Figure 4 is constructed from high-strength concrete and eight A992 steel
reinforcing rods. If the column is subjected to an axial force of 200 kip, determine the required
diameter of each rod so that 60% of the axial force is carried by the concrete.

Problem 9

The A-36 steel pipe in Figure 5 has an outer radius of 20 mm and an inner radius of 15 mm. If it fits
snugly between the fixed walls before it is loaded, determine the reaction at the walls when it is
subjected to the load shown.

Problem 10.

The 20-mm-diameter 2014-T6 aluminum rod shown in Figure 6 is subjected to the triangular
distributed axial load. Determine the displacement of end A.
