WHAT IS A RESEARCH PROBLEM?

) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) )

a problem that someone would like to research

(Fraenkel and Wallen, 2010). A problem can be
anything that a person finds unsatisfactory or
unsettling, a difficult of some sort, a state of affairs
that needs to be changed, anything that is not
working aswell as it might. Problems involve areas of
concern to researchers, conditions they want to
improve, difficulties they want to eliminate, questions
for which they seek answers.

1. The question is feasible

(i.e., it can be investigated without expending
an undue amount of time, energy, or money)
2. The question is clear
(i.e., most people would agree as to what the
key words in the question mean).

3. The question is significant

(i.e., it is worth investigating because it will
contribute important knowledge about the human
condition).
4. The question is ethical
(i.e., it will not involve physical or psychological
harm or damage to human beings or to the natural
or social environment of which they are a part).

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

DESIGNING
RESEARCH TOPIC
Most researchers will agree that choosing a
good topic is a challenging and tedious
task. Because a research topic serves as the
groundwork for any succeeding actions, it must
be defined appropriately at the beginning of
the research work. Otherwise, it may result in
unanticipated complexities to the researcher.

One of the goals of this course is for you
to be able to produce a quantitative
research study that is aligned to your
chosen track.

2. Do a preliminary research
Once you have chosen a broad topic, you need
to have a better understanding of it by reading
some more articles, journals, and related
research studies. Find out how other
researchers gathered their data, what research
instruments were used, how the data were
analyzed, and what important findings they
shared.

3. Define the problem

After getting enough information, you may be
able to list some questions or problems that
you want to research. At this stage, you should
be able to narrow down broad topic into
feasible and manageable research questions. A
broad topic can be narrowed down by limiting
the population, place, period, or a certain
characteristic.

4. Refine the question

This step lets you evaluate the questions
formulated. What specific questions should you
ask? How should you gather your data sufficient
to answer the questions?
