Recall (Constructivist) 5 minutes

1. What is the formula in finding the mean of a discrete

probability distribution?
2. What is the formula in finding the variance of a discrete
probability distribution?
3. What are the steps in finding the mean of a discrete
probability distribution?
4. What are the steps in finding the variance of a discrete
probability distribution?

Motivation (Constructivist) 5 minutes

Activity 1 - Time to Check

Read and analyze the situation given below:

Mr. Umali, a Mathematics teacher, regularly gives a formative

assessment composed of 5 multiple-choice items. After the
assessment, he used to check the probability distribution of the
correct responses, and the data is presented below:
Test Item X Probability P (X)
0 0.03
1 0.05
2 0.12
3 0.30
4 0.28
5 0.22

Based on the data above, observe, analyze and answer the following
questions:
1. What is the summation of the probabilities of the given random
variable? _________________________________
2. Why is it that the probability of random variable x less than 1 but
nonnegative value? ___________________________
3. What is the average or mean of the given probability distribution?
_______________________________________________________________.
4. What are the values of the variance and the standard deviation of
the probability distribution? _______________________________________.

Presentation of the topic (Constructivist) 10 minutes

 Find the mean of the discrete random variable X with the
following probability distribution.
X P(X) X.P(X)
1

Solution:
Step 1. Multiply the value of X by its corresponding
probability value P(X).
Step 2. Find the mean or the expected value of the probability
distribution by getting the sum of the values under the column X.P(X).
μ = E(X) = ∑ ¿¿ X∙P(X)]
3 6 3
= + + +0
8 8 8
12 3
= =
8 2
= 1.5
Therefore, the mean or the expected value of the probability
distribution is 1.5.

 Find the mean and variance of the probability distribution

Step 1. Find the mean of the probability distribution

using the formula μ = ∑ ¿¿ X∙P(X)]
Step 2. Subtract the mean from each value of the random variable X.
Step 3. Square the results obtained in Step 2.
Step 4. Multiply the results obtained in Step 3 by the corresponding
probability.
Step 5. Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 4. The result is
the value of the variance. The formula for the variance is 𝝈2 =∑(X− 𝝁)²
• P(X)
Step 6. Get the square root of the variance to get the standard
deviation.

B.. Development Activity (Collaborative) 10 minutes

Think pair share
Find a partner and construct a frequency distribution table.
Activity 2 – Number of Items Sold
The number of items sold per day at a retail store, with its
corresponding probabilities, is shown in the table. Find the variance
and standard deviation of the probability distribution.

C. Engagement
Activity 3 - Group work
10 minutes
The class will be divided into six groups. They will answer the given
problem below. The group who will give the correct answer after 10
minutes will get additional 5 points on their quiz.

Activity – Surgery Patients

The probabilities that a surgeon operates on 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 patients
in any day are 0.15, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.30, respectively. Find the
average number of patients that a surgeon operates in a day.

Activity – Number of Heads

When three coins are tossed, the probability distribution for the
random variable X representing the number of heads that occur is
given below. Compute the variance and standard deviation of the
probability distribution

A. Complete the table below and find the variance and standard
