I- Objectives
a. The students are able to determine whether a person discharged a gun using the Paraffin-
Diphenylamine test. Note: The basis of this test is the presence of nitrates in the gunpowder
residue.

1. Prepare materials.
2. Let the subject wash his hands without soap or detergent.
3. Heat the paraffin wax in container until it melts.
4. Place the subject hands on a clean sheet of bond paper with the palms facing downward
and the fingers closed together.
5. Using a spoon with cotton, pour melted paraffin wax on the hands of subject from the
thumb and index fingers and the dorsal portion to the little finger side of the hands.
6. Cover the hands and fingers thoroughly with paraffin wax.
7. Allow the wax to cool and solidify before peeling off. Slowly move out your hands from the
cast.
8. Place on the bond paper and label the left hand; write the case number, name of the
subject, time, and date, technician who took the cast, witnesses.
