What is It

As mentioned before, this module focuses on

basic learning competencies in technical drafting,
specifically in maintaining hand tools, drawing
instruments, equipment, and paraphernalia. In this
part of the module, you will understand how the
drafting materials should be properly kept and
maintained in order to last.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s discuss them

one by one and learn important concepts about this
lesson.

Topic
1
Safety Procedures in Maintaining Hand Tools,
Drawing
Instruments, Equipment, and Paraphernalia.
In technical drafting, it is better to own a few good tools than many poor ones.
In acquiring tools, be guided by two things: quality and durability. Quality tools are
known by their popular brand names. But also consider that the life of any drafting
instruments/tools will depend on how well you take care of them. Drafting
instruments/tools should be well maintained to continue working properly.
Observing proper practices in organizing and storing these items has a great deal to
do with keeping them in tip-top shape and good working condition. You can assure
that your tools will last longer if you take good care of them.

Drafting tools have small, delicate, and complex parts, that is why they have
to be carefully handled and properly maintained. We should clean them before,
during, and after using and keep them in a safe and proper place. Proper
maintenance will keep them in good condition.
As a student, you should know how to take good care of your tools, instruments,
and equipment to maximize their use. You must be responsible for handling them
properly.

The following are the general procedures for cleaning and maintaining drafting
tools and equipment. These procedures are also recommended as a routine activity
before and after working on a drawing.

7
General Cleaning and Maintenance Procedure

Lay all the drafting tools on a table and separate them into piles of

1 alike items. Put the pencils, markers, erasers, rulers, stencils, paper
items together.

Spray the liquid cleaner to the cloth and wipe off all residues to
2 the supplies.

Use erasers to rub out any black marks. Do this by rubbing the eraser
3 against a clean piece of paper until the black smudge disappears.

Run your hands through your drafting brush to remove any loose
4 debris and wipe it with the cleaning cloth to remove any residue
left on the handle.

Roll up your drafting paper into a tight roll. Secure them with a
5 rubber band at each end. Place the roll into a drafting tube for
storage.

Place the pens and markers into the long slots of the organizer
6 tray. Place the erasers, lead refills, push pins, paper. clips, small
rulers and mounting stickers in the smaller cube slots.

Wipe the compass with a clean cloth. Wind the compass down until it is

7 straight if you will store it in the organizer tray. If it has its own case,
then wind it to the size the case has set for it to be stored, and place it
into the box.

Make a folder to hold all your stencils. Create holding flaps in an

8 ascending order so the stencils can be layered and easy to see and
access when needed.

Place this newly made stencil holder into a large plastic or mesh

9 pouch. Put a dry cleaning cloth in the pouch, placed over the
stencils, to help keep them clean.

Place the drafting brush, rulers and organizer tray into the pouch.

10 If the compass has its own storage box, it can also be placed into
the pouch. All the major tools should be in this portable carrying
pouch. Your paper should be in the separate portable carrying
drafting tube.

8
Let’s Continue!

Here are the things that you must and mustn’t do when using drafting
materials. Remember, all that we do must have a limitation, right? So here it is.

Do’s and Don’ts on the Proper Care of Drafting Tools,

Instruments and Equipment

Pencil
➢ Never sharpen the pencil over the drawing or
close to any of your equipment.
➢ Keep your pencil points sharp at all times
because it produces sharp and neat lines.
➢ Do not sharpen your pencil on top of your
workplace. The granite will taint the drawing
paper. It will make the surface dirty.
https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/drafting-tools ➢ Do not bite the lead of your pencil. Lead is
poisonous. It is hazardous to our health.
➢ Hold the pencil 60º angle while drawing.

T-square, Triangle and French curve

➢ Do not use the T-square a rough surface.
➢ Do not use the edge of the T-square and
triangles as guide in cutting paper. It will break
the edge of the blade or create a nick that will
make it to produce straight lines.
➢ Use T-Square in drawing horizontal lines.
➢ Use triangles in drawing vertical & inclined
lines. https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/drafting-tools

https://www.google.com.ph/search?q=drafting+
scale+and+ruler&tbm
Ruler and scale
➢ Scale should not be pricked with needle points
of the divider or compass when measurements
are taken.
➢ Do not use scale as a ruler.

Speedball pen, lettering pen and pen holder

➢ After using, clean the speedball pen by wiping-

off or scraping the ink on it with clean damp
cloth. You may also use blade for scrapping.
➢ Lettering pens, like technical pens, should be
cleaned with water and soap. Afterwards, wipe
it off with a clean, dry cloth. https://www.google.com.ph/search?q=speed+ball+p
en+and+lettering+pen&tbm
➢ Always keep it together with speedball pens.

9
Divider and compass
➢ Do not oil the joints of the legs of the divider.
➢ Do not use the divider as substitute for
thumbtacks in fastening the drawing paper on
the drawing board or table top.
➢ The needle points must be sharp and of equal
length.
https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/drafting-tools
➢ Do not drop the compass and ruling pen and
divider. It might cause a notch on the ribs of
the instruments.
➢ Hold the compass by the handle while making
circular features.
Ruling pen
➢ Sharpen the nibs or blade of the ruling pen with
metal sandpaper when it is no longer in a
parabolic shape.
➢ Rub the dried ink on the nibs with the use of
paper to avoid clogging at its end when in use.
https://www.cultpens.com/i/q/JK62771/jakar-ruling-pen

Drawing paper
➢ It should be stored in rolled form.
➢ It should not be crumpled or wet nor kept in a
moist or cold place.
➢ Oslo paper or bond paper must be kept in a
large envelope.
https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/drafting-tools

Masking tape or scotch tape, eraser and erasing

shield
➢ They should all be kept together with other
supplies to avoid losing them.
➢ Do not use the eraser on surfaces and spaces
without mistakes. A surface rubbed by an eraser https://www.google.com/search?q=drafting+eraser&tbm
tends to ink-bleed and smear. https://www.google.com/search?q=masking+tape+scotch+t
ape+and+eraser+drafting&tbm

Drawing board and drawing table

➢ It should always be in good working condition.

➢ Wipe the top of your drawing board before
starting to work. A clean table serves a clean
drawing paper.
➢ Do not leave any kind of marks on your board
to keep the surface smooth.

10
Hey, don’t forget to bear in mind the Safety
Reminders to Remember while Drawing.

a. Be sure to keep your hands and instruments clean.

b. Never sharpen pencil over your board while working.
c. Avoid eating sticky and wet food while drawing.
d. Always listen to the instruction of the teacher on how
a drawing will be done.
e. Concentrate. A person who concentrates well in his
work will be able to do work accurately, neatly and
will be able to finish at the given time frame.

Let’s Read This!

Precautions Before, During and After Using Drafting Tools,

Instruments and Equipment.

Working safely can involve changes in how drafting materials are selected and
how they are handled. Tools and other drafting materials must be properly used. A
good worker or draftsman keeps and takes care of these tools. However, it is still a
necessity to follow some precautions in using drafting tools. They are as follows:
1. Be sure to inspect tools before using them. This is to check if they are in
working condition. This can be detected when there is ease and speed when
in use.
2. After using a tool, clean it thoroughly with a damp cloth. Wipe it dry with
another piece of cloth before keeping it.
3. When not in use, the T-square is preferably hung by inserting the hole to a
nail (attached to a wall) at the end of its blade.
4. Do not abuse or misuse any piece of drawing instruments.
5. Avoid throwing tool to anybody instead hand it over
6. Avoid setting off the distances individually by moving the scale to a new
position each time, because slight errors in the measurements may
accumulate and give rise to a large error.
7. Avoid unnecessary sliding of T-square or triangles across the drawing. Pick
up the triangle by their tips and tilt the T-square blade upward slightly before
moving.
8. Report defective tool and any hazard to the instructor immediately.

11
Topic Procedures in Cleaning, Tightening and Simple
2 Repairing of Hand Tools, Drawing Instruments,
Equipment, and Paraphernalia

You have just finished the first topic. Think about how
you can apply or demonstrate your understanding of the ideas
and concepts presented in the previous section.

Now, I believe you are ready to learn more. Here is the

next topic of this module that will surely make you realize how
helpful it is.

Let’s Move On!

Hand tools and equipment are subjected to different levels of abuse while in
use. These abuses may result in the tools being dirty, loosely connected, or even
damaged. Before using tools or equipment, it must be inspected properly to ensure
that they are operational and safe.

To be able to make the most out of maintaining drafting tools, here are some
procedures to consider when maintaining hand tools and other drafting materials.

o The work area must always be kept neat and tidy.

o All tools and equipment must be placed in a clean and dry place.
o Clean tools and equipment work more efficiently. This lessens the effort
needed to operate them and reduces the possibility of mishaps.
o Before cleaning any tool, be sure to wear the proper personal protective
equipment (PPE). Gloves, masks, and goggles are usually worn when
cleaning tools since most cleaning agents and solutions are harmful to the
human body.
o Only use cleaning agents as prescribed by the tool or equipment
manufacturer. Follow the cleaning procedures as well to make sure that
no damage will be inflicted on the tools.
o Cleaning the tools after use is highly recommended.
o Tools with moving parts often suffer loosening of its parts. This is normal
since these segments keep on moving. A tool with loose parts will not
function properly and may cause injuries.
o Gripping tools such as a plier is an example that needs tightening. A plier’s
rivet must be well tightened to be able to grip properly.
o Lubricants must also be applied after tightening to reduce the friction.
o Driving tools’ handles must also be tightened to reduce hand strain when
turning. A loosely connected handle will make it almost impossible to use
it.

12
REMEMBER:
In doing simple repair of tools, make sure that you are
knowledgeable in doing so. Repairing tools without sufficient skills
may result to further damage or inflict injuries to the fixer. Small
repairs like tightening, sharpening and changing of handles may not
require special skills to do. Power tools and specialized equipment on
the other hand may require specialized skills in repairing. It is
recommended that complicated tools and equipment be brought to
the authorized service center. If a tool or equipment is beyond repair,
it must be disposed properly.

At this point, let us get to know more about maintaining hand tools, drawing
instruments, equipment, and paraphernalia by exploring the last topic of this
learning module. Let’s find out!

Topic Common Malfunctions (Unplanned Or

Unusual Events) When Using Tools, Drawing
3 Instruments, Equipment, And Paraphernalia.

Maintaining the good operational condition of all the hand tools, equipment,
and paraphernalia in the workplace is the responsibility of everyone. Since these
tools help in the completion of the different job requirements, keeping them well
preserved will make work easier and more efficient.
The proper use of tools, equipment, and paraphernalia will greatly increase
efficiency and occupational safety in the workplace. Having the proper knowledge
and skills in using such tools is needed to operate and use them effectively. But more
often than not, problems and malfunctions may arise while using these tools.
(Mejica 2017)

These are the causes of common malfunctions of drawing tools, equipment,

and paraphernalia:

1. Lack of proper care, inspection, and maintenance of the tools and

equipment.
2. Improper handling of drafting tools & equipment and paraphernalia.

3. Unobserved safety precautions.

The table above shows the possible malfunctions of drafting tools and
equipment if not properly used. The effects of those malfunctions are also indicated
for you to know what will happen if your drafting materials are not properly
maintained. But don’t worry, remedies are made available for you. Always remember
that this module is developed to help you know anything about this lesson.

BITS OF INFORMATION
❖ There is certainly no absolute way to avoid any unforeseen malfunctions.
❖ The only way to minimize them is to have the appropriate knowledge in
using the different tools.
❖ Proper inspection and assessment of tools must also be practiced to ensure
the safety of the worker and the accurate completion of a job requirement.
❖ Having a first aid kit in the work area is also necessary so that quick
response and cure can be applied in case of any injuries.

14

tools used.
Put a dry cleaning cloth in the pouch, placed over the stencils, to help keep
them clean.
Run your hands through your drafting brush to remove any loose debris
and wipe it with the cleaning cloth to remove any residue left on the handle.
Create holding flaps in ascending order so the stencils can be layered and
easy to see and access when needed.
Put the pens and markers into the long slots of the organizer tray.
