Reflection Notes on Unit 1 – Foundation of Information Systems in Business.

My introduction to computing was back in the mid 80’s with the use of notepad word processing
application in the MS-DOS operating system.

I am from the generation who has seen the development in computer operating systems from
Windows Operating System in MS-DOS to Windows 11. I am comfortable with the MS systems
– operating and applications – so was unable to explore beyond into UNIX systems. However, I
have encountered and used Apple products and systems from clients Apple Mac laptops to assist
with their work and projects.

In a nutshell, I have encountered and used Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7,
Windows 8, Windows 10 and now Windows 11 along with the use of the Microsoft Office
Application Suites, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I tried my hand on the use of Access
however I was and is unable to create databases using this application except for using information
stored in an Access database system.

The use of information systems and making decisions has been part of my work life over the last
few decades and I will continue to do so into the future.

Unit 1 of this course has given me a broader understanding and perspective on the use of
information systems in businesses and work. Understanding how information are collated and
stored for use in decision making and improvement not only in businesses but also in public
services, statutory organizations and non-government organizations (NGO’s) would help
employees, managers, and executives make informed decisions and be able to improve and derive
better outcomes for all stakeholders.

Making use of the Information System is one thing but understanding the concept and the
framework on which the systems are being created, managed and made available for use has and
will continue to improve performances of businesses and organizations.
