III. Summary:

Modernization theory explains how society undergoes industrialization,

urbanization, and social changes that transform lives. It originated in Western Europe
with the Columbian Exchange, where Christopher Columbus discovered the
Americas. The Industrial Revolution, also known as the First Industrial Revolution,
occurred from the 18th to 19th century, introducing new technologies like steam
power and mechanization, leading to significant changes in agriculture,
manufacturing, and transportation.

Walt Whitman Rostow, an American economist, professor, and political theorist,

identified four stages of modernization: Traditional Stage, Transitional Stage, Take-
off Stage, and Drive to Maturity. Traditional societies are small, local communities
with limited resources and technology, while Transitional Stage introduces western
values, practices, and expertise. Take-off Stage leads to economic growth,
entrepreneurial class, and exporting. Drive to Maturity stage involves investment in
education, media, and birth control.

Dependency theory explains a state's economic development based on external

influences on national policies, including political, economic, and cultural factors.

World-system theory, developed by American sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein

in the 1970s, suggests a world economic system where some countries benefit while
others are exploited. This theory, which focuses on boundaries, structures, and rules
of legitimation, highlights the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of the world-
system.
