3.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

Personnel performing Magnetic Particle Examination to this procedure shall be qualified and certifled
in accordance with PT. Surveyor Indonesia Written Practice No. SI-TC-1A, Rev. 1
MT Level II technician shall carry out magnetic particle testing in accordance with this procedure.

4.0 PROCEDURE
4.L Sufaceconditioning
a) Suface preparation by grinding or machining may be necessary where sufface
irregularities could mask indications due to discontinuities.
b) Prior to Magnetlc Particle Examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent
areas within at least 1 inch shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding
flux and spatter, oil, or other extraneous matter that could interfere with the
examination.

\- c) Cleaning may be accomplished using detergents, organic solvents, descaling solutions,

paint removers, vapor degreasing, sand or girt blasting, or ultrasonic cleaning methods.
d) If coatings are left on the paft in the area being examined, it must be demonstrated
that indications can be detected through the existing maximum coating thickness
applied. When AC Yoke technique is used, the demonstration must be in accordance
with Mandatory Appendix I of article 7 of ASME BPV Sect. V, 2007 Edition.
e) When coatings are applied temporarily to un-coated sufaces only in amounts sufficient
to enhance pafticle contrast, it must be demonstrated that indications can be detected
through the enhancement coating.
4.2 Method of examination
Examination shall be done by the continuous method, that is the magnetizing, current remains
on while the examination medium is being applied and while excess of the examination
medium is being removed.

AC Yoke technique shall only be applied to detect discontinuities that are open to the
surface of the part. The AC Yoke to be used shall meet the requirements of T-762 of
ASME BPV Sect. V, 2007 Edition.

4.2.2 Yoke Permanent Magnet (Articulated Legs)

Permanent magnet should be used when power supply is not available or the
working condition does not permit hot work. Type of permanent magnet to be used
shall be acceptable to client
4.3 Apparatus
a) AC and Permanent Yoke : Magnaflux, Parker orTiede
4.4 Examination medium
Wet Magnetic Particle (color contrast or fluorescent particles) may be used with spray
application. The color contrast particles used shall provide adequate contrast with surface
being examined with spray application. The temperature of the wet pafticle suspension and
\- the surface shall follow the manufacture recommendation.
WET METHOD MANUFACTURE TRADE NAME
Solvent Cleaner Magnaflux or other solvent SKC-S or Equivalent
White contrast Magnaflux WCP-2
MPI Ink Magnaflux 7HF
Fluorescent Magnaflux 14AM

4.5 Magnetic particle field indicator

To verify the adequacy or direction of the magnetizing field, the magnetic field indicator
described in Figure 1 shall be used by positioning the indicator on the surface to be examined,

4.6 Direction of magnetizing

At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area at minimum 1 second of
duration. During the second examination, the lines of magnetic flux shall be approximately
perpendicular to those used during the first examination. A different technique for
magnetization may be used for the second examination.
4.7 Examination coverage
All examinations shall be conducted with sufficient overlap to assure 1000/o coverage at the
required sensitivity.
4.8 Testing procedure
a) Magnetizing technique
AC electromagnetic yokes, as shown in paragraph 4.2.1 shall be used for magnetizing
technique. The lifting power of the yoke as per paragraph 4.2.t al the maximum pole
spacing which is to be used shall be checked prior to examination or shall be checked at
least once a year or whenever a yoke has been damaged.

b) Light level control

With non fluorescent particle, the examination is performed using adequate visible light
intensity or using a minimum light intensity of 100 fc (1000 Lx) to ensure adequate
sensitivity during the examination and evaluation of indication'
For fluorescent pafticle, black light intensity shall measure at least once every 8 hours,
and whenever the work station is changed. The examiner shall be in the darkened area
for at least 5 min. prior to performing the examination to enables his eyes to adapt to
dark viewing. If the examiner wears glasses or lenses, they shall not photosensitive. The
black light intensity at the examination surface shall not be less than 1000 uw/cm2,
when measured with a suitable black light meter. Minimum warm up time for black light
is 5 minutes.

5.0 SAFEW
The particular hazards to be safe-guarded against are fire (eg. due to overheating), electric shock
(all equipment of 110V and above to have eafth leakage trip arrangements) and toxic materials
(evaporation of aerosol propellant, overheated lead contact pads giving off vapour, etc). These
hazards may be compounded by use within confined spaces. Care should be taken to ensure all
\- materials are used in accordance with the manufacturcrs instructions.
Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

6.0 PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION

When procedure qualification is specified, a change of requirement in Appendix 1 identified as an
essential variable from the specified value, or range of values, shall require re-qualification of the
written procedure. A change of a requirement identified as a nonessential variable from the specified
value, or range of values, does not require re-qualiflcation of the written procedure.

7.O EVALUATION OF INDICATION

Indicatlons will be revealed by retention of magnetic particles. All such indications are not necessarily
imperfection, however, since excessive surface roughness, magnetic permeability variations such as
at the edge of heat affected zones, etc, may be produce similar indications, An indication is the

evidence of a mechanical impefection. Only indications which have any dimension grater than 1/16
inch (1.5 mm) shall be considered relevant.

a) A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times of the width.

b) A rounded indications one of circular or elliptical shape with a length equal to or leas than
three times of its width.

c) Any questionable or doubtful indications, shall be re-examined by MT and or PT to determine

whether or not they are relevant.

8.0 ACCEPTANCESTANDARDS
8.1 ASME BPV Sect. VIII Div. 1 Appendix 6-4, 2007 Edition
8.2 ASME BPV Sect. VIII Div. 2 Article 9-130, 2007 Edition

These acceptance standards shall apply unless other more restrictive standards are specified for
\- specific materials or application within this procedure.
All surfaces to be examined shall be free of :

a) Relevant linear indications.

b) Relevant rounded indications greater than 3/16 inch (5.0 mm).

c) Four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by LlL6 inch (1,5 mm), or less
(edge to edge).

An indication of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes it; however, the
size of the indication is the basis for acceptance evaluation.

9.0 EXAMINATION OF AREAS FROM WHICH IMPERFECTION HAVE BEEN REMOVED

The area in which the defect has been removed (prior to making weld repair) shall be re-examined in
accordance with this procedure to ensure that the defect has been removed or reduced to acceptably
size imperfection.

1O.O RE.EXAMINATION OF REPAIRED AREA

After the weld is completed and the suface has been smoothly flnished, the re-examination of
repaired area shall be performed in accordance with this procedure.
\-.
11.0 POST CLEANING
The examined are after examination shall be cleaned by blowing of compressed air and the magnetic
particles removed, for dry method. For wet method, suitable cleaning shall be employed. It should
conducted as soon as practical using a process that does not adversely affect the part.

12.0 DEMAGNETIZATION
Demagnetization following examination is only carried out where specified by client or exceed than 3
Gauss and included by contract agreed when residual magnetism in the paft could interfere with
subsequent processes or usage, the part shall be demagnetized any time after completion of the
examination. It shall be carried out to one of techniques detailed in ASME BPV Sect. V Article 7
clause T-755 and ASME BPV SE 709,2007 Edition.
