CULMINATING PERFORMANCE TASK

Subject: General Mathematics (For HUMSS)

Subject Description: The student must know how to solve problems involving rational exponential and logarithmic functions;
solve business related problems; and apply logic to real-life situations.
Grade Level: 11
Semester | Academic Year: First | 2022-2023
Culminating Performance The learner can accurately construct mathematical models to represent real-life situations using functions.
Standard:
Transfer Goal: The learner understands further the connection of Mathematics in the other field, and how mathematical
models are applied in real-life situations.
Performance Task Scenario: Video that informs that parents about the development of a child in terms of its vocabulary.

Goals: Your task is to inform the parents about the common development a 10-month-old to 50-month-old child will encounter in
terms of their linguistic development.
Role: You are developmental psychologist who are tasked to study and inform the parents about the development of a child in terms
of their vocabulary.
Audience: The target audience are the parents with a 10-month-old to 50-month-old child.
Situation: Language and communication skills are critical to a child’s development. Good communication makes them better able to engage
in socialization as well as learn from formal classroom instruction and the environment around them. It is part of the job of a
developmental psychologist to be an advocate of the children in terms of their development- in this case it is the linguistic side.
To do this, you will be creating an informercial video that will help the parents to be informed about the number of common
words that a child can say or use at their age. Below is a mathematical to be use as your basis to get the needed numbers.

Mathematical Model: The number of words in a child’s vocabulary is a function of the child’s age. The formula for the size of
vocabularies of typical children between the ages of 20 months and 50 months is given by 𝑓 (𝑎) = 60𝑎 − 900, where 𝑎
represents the child’s age in months and 𝑓(𝑎) represents the number of words that the child uses correctly.
Aside from the mathematical model, you will be needing also to conduct research and gather more accurate information about
the vocabulary development of a child to support the numbers.
Products & You will have to do the following:
Performance: 1. Complete the table below using the mathematical model 𝑓 (𝑎) = 60𝑎 − 900.
𝒂 20 25 30 35 40 50
𝒇(𝒂)
2. Graph the function, letting the x-axis represent the child’s age 𝑎, and the y-axis represent the number of words 𝑓(𝑛).
3. From the given function, answer the following questions.
a. How many words does a typical 25-month-old child know?
b. How many words does a typical 50-month-old child know?
c. How many new words does a typical child learn each month from age 20 months to the age of 50 months?
d. Will the given function work for a 10-month-old child?
4. Research on the first few words that a child utters. Also, study about some tips to encourage early language
development in children.
5. Create an infomercial video that presents the answers to the given tasks, as well as some FYIs or trivia about the
child’s vocabulary.
6. Submit the research and information about the vocabulary development and all the required products and performance
on or before December 7, 2022.
Standards: The mathematical model should be well explained in the informercial. Correct answers to the questions above should also be
evident in the video with comprehensive explanation. Supporting data and information gathered should be seem in the video.
The infomercial video will be evaluated based on the following rubrics.

Content . Gathered data and information should be presented clearly and came from a reliable resource.
Discussion must be comprehensive appropriate for the target audience.
Use of Mathematical Model Mathematical model must be used correctly. Accurate computations and graph should be included.
Presentation Presents the mathematical model and gathered data in an interesting sequence which the audience can
follow. Uses visual materials effectively while clearly presenting the information that needs to be
