As an operations manager, how do you discourage duplicate orders which often

lead to excess capacity?

The given article suggests that it is easy to overestimate demand which however
ends up with excess capacity. In turn, companies misunderstand the fact that it is due to
their reluctancy to wait when in fact it is not. With that, as a future manager, I think that it
is best that companies should be proactive in the given problem.

First, company personnel should be trained enough to audit duplicate orders so

that they can resolve such problems. This can be done by comparing orders, searching
for patterns such as duplicate names, and resolving the underlying causes of
duplicates. Second, is to Assure the real-time sharing of information between various
departments or locations. To keep everyone updated on order progress, this can be
accomplished using integrated software systems or regular communication sessions.
And lastly of course, is to communicate well with the customers. Some companies rely
too much on automated results which when overlooked can cause duplication. The
head of operations should implement an order tracking system that enables easy order
status checking for all stakeholders. By determining whether an order has previously
been placed, this can help avoid placing duplicate orders. These are only few of the
many ways companies can eliminate or at least reduce such problem. But it could
create a difference especially in instances of excess capacity.
