Welcome
Thank you for choosing Pearson as your curriculum and technology partner. We are very
excited that you have chosen to participate in our pilot project for English Benchmark Young
Learners.
Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the information in this guide, which will
support you as you help your students demonstrate their English ability.
Yours truly,
Pearson English & Schools
4
Features of the Pilot
During the pilot, some elements of the test will be different from
the full version:
● Number of tests: The full programme includes three tests
per level. During the pilot, you will only be able to give
children one test per level.
● Registration process: The Pearson team will give you and
your organisation access to English Benchmark, after which
you will be able to create and manage test groups.
● Speed of results: We aim to deliver results within minutes
but during the pilot please expect results within an hour.
5
Your Feedback
As this is a pilot programme, we will be asking for your feedback on:
● The user experience with the tablet and the administration tools
● The suitability of the test for your students
● The usefulness of the results for you
● The training and support provided
● Your thoughts on the level names
● Any changes you would like to see
The data gathered from the tests will also help us ensure the test is
suitable and engaging for children from ages 6 to 14, across all levels of
difficulty.

How to Use the
Test
with your curriculum

10
How to Use the Test
1. As a Diagnostic and formative tool: The test can be
administered at the beginning of the school year to obtain a
baseline measure of the student’s English proficiency,
identify learning needs and help inform instruction.
*Please note during the pilot, students will only be asked to take one test
and progress reports will not be available.
11
Using English Benchmark through the
Year
● An initial test should be taken at the start of the academic year to set the benchmark for a
student’s starting proficiency level and to inform learning goals
● A subsequent test can be taken approximately mid-year (after minimum 120 hours of
learning) to check student progress and identify new and/or changed learning goals
● A final test should be taken at the end of the year to see progress over the year and inform
learner goals for the following year
● You do not have to use three tests per year - the number of tests per student is entirely
dependent on the number of instructional hours a student receives within the year
● For maximum benefit, students should take the test in each school year, allowing you to track
progress throughout Primary School

How to Choose the Right Level
English Benchmark provides five test levels to give you the greatest accuracy. Levels should be assigned based on learning
hours and/or previous English proficiency rather than by age or school grade, although the latter can be used as a guideline. A
table has been provided to help you choose the most suitable level.
Considerations:
● The number of learning hours needed to make progress increases as students move up levels. Research for average
learners indicates that to move <A1-A1 = 240 hours, A1-A2 = 150 hours, A2-B1 = 400 hours, B1-B2 = 800 hours
● Learning hours assumes at least one year learning English in kindergarten and prior exposure to / practise of the
Roman alphabet
● Ages, grades and Pearson course guidelines provided in the table are approximate and based on a school system
starting at age 6 (or younger). For older beginners starting in later grades, these guidelines should be ignored and
hours of English used as guidance instead e.g. older beginners of 8-9 years in grade 3 but in their first year of English
should take Level 1 and then move up levels according to their score and learning hours.
● Students can move up tests either:
a) when all of their skills are within the range of the next level
b) when the content of the course they are studying aligns best to the next level
c) when they have undertaken sufficient learning hours

Quick Guide
18
What You will Need:
To run the test, you will need:
19
Choosing and Setting Up the Test Room
Tests should be administered in a quiet, Suggested room plan:
distraction-free room. Excess noise,
whispered answers, or other children’s voices
will spoil recorded answers. To prevent this, a
distance of 10ft (3m) between students 6-10 ft
during testing is recommended, with a 2-3m
minimum of 6ft (2m).
20
Teacher-to-Student Ratio
Teachers may need to guide students through the Sign In, Volume, and Microphone setup at the beginning of
the test. In order for the teacher to assist students with logging into the app and answering any questions that
may arise, we recommend specific ratios (teacher to student) by test level. These ratios are suggested as
guidelines and by no means constitute a rule as the size of the group should take into account the age, needs,
and personalities of the students.

Preparing Your Tablets
The English Benchmark application was designed for Apple iOS and
Android tablets. Below are some recommendations before
administering the tests on your tablets.
1. Pre-install the App Ensure the app is installed before the start
of the class session. The app can be downloaded from our
website to each tablet. It then needs to be given access to the
microphone. This takes about 5 to 10 mins per tablet depending
on the speed of your internet connection and familiarity with
tablets.
2. Download Test Content Downloading the test content ahead of
time will ensure that students can launch the test more quickly
when they sign in.
3. Charge Tablets Ensure the tablets are fully charged to avoid
losing power during the test.
22
Practice Questions & Practice Test
The app includes unscored practice questions
and Practice Tests. Children will feel more
comfortable and need less help with the real test
if they are familiar with the app, question types,
volume controls, and the headset.
