Reading Report for Submission Name: Huma Nasir

Summary:
In this chapter of “doing theological research” writer reported about the five commandments of the
theological research. The first one emphasizes on the importance of theology; second one is all about the
wrestle of a researcher. This wrestle might be dangerous but meaningful for sure. The third one reminds
us about focus with the example of prism. The fourth commandment argued with the importance of true
information. The fifth one insists about developing the habit of reviewing work and allowing others to
respond.
This chapter does not end on it, it also includes three different approaches that help students in research.
Observations:
1. The research work wonders and challenges of theological study also could be seen as a form of
worship. (Page 10)
2. Theology helps us to have a journey from our immediate context to the original context, so that
we can go in more depth. (Page 10)
3. Theological research means true and honest findings. (Page 12)
4. We are learning all these research commandments and approaches not just for good academic
manors or writings but most importantly we are doing this for bearing fruitful results. (Page 13)
5. Examination of sources can lead us to question or critic those sources and trace back to their
origins or foundations. (Page 14)
Personal Response:
While reading this chapter I knew many new things specially related to the five commandments about
research and about the importance of all these. On the other hand, I also felt that might be due to
richness of material it took much time to even for becoming a part of my passive learning.
On page 11 he stated that “religion begins with a question, and theology with a problem.” I did not get
this I wish he elaborated this a little more.
