Construction of subways were the need of the hour. Growing traffic on roads caused untold sufferings to people, particularly the pedestrians and led to a lot of confusion and accidents. The only remedy to cope with the situation was the construction of subways to ease and streamline traffic on roads. Unfortunately, subways in Chennai have become a big nuisance. Gradually they are turning into dens of dirt and crime. They are misused. illegal encroachment have made things even worse. They have swallowed a big chunk of public space for their commercial use. Hawkers and beggars have done the rest. Actually, subways in Chennai have become hunting grounds for bad characters, eve teasers and criminals. Chain-snatching. incidents have become quite common. As far as their maintenance is concemed, less said the better. They present a picture of neglect and non-performance. Sweepers shirk work and rarely come on duty. Public toilets stink. Dust and dirt dominate the scene. We hope the concemed authorities will rise from their slumber and take immediate necessary action to deal with this nuisance otherwise people of good sense and taste will start avoiding these subways in Chennai.
