WHAT IS A STATISTIC?
• A statistic is any quantity that is calculated from the
data in a sample, such as the mean and the standard
deviation, which characterises an important aspect in
the sample. Statistics are useful mathematical tools for
data analysis. Statistical tools are so useful that
statistical analyses are performed by individuals from
many disciplines – from those in STEM fields such as
people who conduct clinical studies to those in finance
and management.
What Is Descriptive Statistics In
Excel?
• Descriptive Statistics in Excel summarizes the statistical data using
the available information in the dataset. This technique also provides
us with various types of output options.
• The Excel Descriptive Statistics function is an inbuilt tool found in the
“Data Analysis” group of the “Data” tab.
How To Enable Descriptive Statistics
In Excel?
• The steps to enable the Descriptive Statistics option in Excel are,
1.First, we must go to “File”, and then “Options.”
How To Enable Descriptive Statistics
In Excel?
• Next, we need to go to “Add-ins.”
How To Enable Descriptive Statistics
In Excel?
• Next, we need to go to “Add-ins.”
How To Enable Descriptive Statistics
In Excel?
• We may see all the inactive applications under “Add-ins” on the
right-hand side. Select “Analysis Toolpak”, and click “Go.”
How To Enable Descriptive Statistics
In Excel?
• With the Add-ins window opened, click the small square
next to “Analysis ToolPak” and click “Ok”.
How To Enable Descriptive Statistics
In Excel?
• the “Data Analysis” button should now be available
under the “Data” tab.
How to Use the Descriptive Statistics
Feature
• Although the example below shows fluorescence
intensity (FI) data from a spectrofluorometry experiment,
the descriptive statistics feature may be used for data
obtained from other analytical techniques such as UV-
Vis spectroscopy and HPLC. As an example, we will use
the “Descriptive Statistics” feature on the data for 0.2
ppm. The measurements were obtained in replicate (n =
5).
Select the “Data” tab and click “Data
Analysis”.
Select “Descriptive Statistics” and click
“OK” to open the “Descriptive Statistics”
window.
With the “Descriptive Statistics” window
opened, click the small box next to
“Labels in First Row”.
Click the small square to the left of “OK”
and select the data points for 0.2 ppm
(include the first row, ie. the label).
Click the square below the “X” button to
return to the full “Descriptive Statistics”
window.
Under “Output options”, select the circle
next to “Output Range” and then click
the button highlighted below.
Click all four boxes highlighted
below.
• Confidence Level for Mean is set to 95% by default. You
may change this to 90% or 99% if you wish by simply
deleting “95” and replacing it with the desired value.
Click OK to generate the table below for
the 0.2 ppm data which should look like
the image shown below.
